The Washington Wizards are entering the new season with renewed optimism, and much of that excitement centers around No. 1 overall pick AJ Dybantsa.

According to ESPN’s Ohm Youngmisuk, team owner Ted Leonsis has described Dybantsa as a “next-generation prototype,” reflecting the organization’s belief that the rookie could become the cornerstone of its future.

Washington’s outlook has also improved after acquiring Trae Young and Anthony Davis in trades last season.

Combined with an emerging group of young talent, the additions have raised expectations that the Wizards could become legitimate contenders for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Young revealed that several players will gather in Los Angeles this summer for offseason workouts, giving Dybantsa an opportunity to build chemistry with his new teammates before training camp.

The highly regarded rookie is especially looking forward to learning from two established NBA stars, believing both can help accelerate his development.

“When you’re playing with a guy of that stature, I’ll definitely get easy shots from him if nothing else,” Dybantsa said of Young.

He also believes Anthony Davis’ experience as a former No. 1 overall pick will be invaluable as he begins his own NBA journey.

“[AD] was the No. 1 pick many years back, so he’s been through a lot of the stuff that I’ve got to go through.”
