Daniel Farke’s men looked as though they had the Blues right where they wanted them, subsequently leading by two goals after 50 minutes of the encounter.

However, a 12-minute spell saw the Whites capitulate against Xabi Alonso’s men and ship four goals, which put an abrupt end to the supporters’ hopes of reaching the fourth round.

The manager rotated his pack for last night’s cup clash, and it highlighted why multiple players are not at the level needed for the club to reach the next level in the months ahead.

The Welshman struggled to make the desired impact in such a role, as he was unable to provide the goods at either end of the pitch for Farke’s men last night.

He failed to complete any of the three dribbles he attempted during the defeat, whilst losing 87% of his ground duels - leading to the 28-year-old being replaced in the 66th minute.

However, he wasn’t the only player to fail to deliver on Wednesday night, as midfielder Sean Longstaff also failed to take advantage of the opportunity handed his way.

Like James, the 28-year-old was starting his first game since the Forest triumph, but could only come out on top of 50% of the ground duels he entered during the defeat.

He also failed to complete any of the dribbles and crosses he attempted, highlighting his struggles with the ball and his inability to create any chances for those ahead of him.

The midfielder has demonstrated that he’s not at the level needed if the club are to achieve success, with the manager needing to remove him from his senior ranks.

In truth, Farke's gamble did not pay off. The likes of James and Longstaff will be lucky to keep their places, as will Melvin Bard who who had a nightmare debut on Wednesday evening.

They aren't the only players who should be fighting for their place.

However, it’s safe to say the 27-year-old was unable to impress within attacking areas, notably handed a 4/10 match rating by Leeds Live.

Nmecha could only register 21 touches of the ball during his 66 minutes on the pitch, with goalkeeper Michael Zetterer managing to have more - showcasing his lack of positive impact.

He could also complete just five passes during the aforementioned period, which saw him pick out a teammate once every 13 minutes - a simply unacceptable tally.

Within touches, the German striker lost possession 12 times - with over 50% of his touches against the Blues resulting in the attacker gifting the ball back to the hosts.

Calvert-Lewin usually provides an impressive aerial option for Farke’s side, but it’s safe to say Nmecha was unable to emulate such a quality during last night’s defeat.

The 27-year-old could only win 50% of his ground duels and was largely outfought by the opposition’s backline in his attempts to provide the goods in forward areas.

After such a showing, it’s clear that Calvert-Lewin is Leeds’ number one centre-forward option, with Farke only able to rely upon the Englishman in front of goal.

Nmecha should join Longstaff in being taken out of the starting lineup, with both players ultimately way below the level needed for success in 2026/27 and beyond.
