Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayAndy Ruiz Jr. has offered another excuse for the decline that followed his historic victory over Anthony Joshua. The former unified heavyweight champion says he essentially trained himself for his fights against Chris Arreola, Luis Ortiz, and Jarrell Miller.
Ruiz Jr. returns against Damian Knyba on Friday at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, after more than two years away. He has reunited with Manny Robles, the trainer who guided him to his seventh-round stoppage of Joshua in June 2019.
“For the other fights, when I fought Arreola, when I fought Luis Ortiz, when I fought Miller, I was kind of training myself. All I had was the mitt guy and the conditioning guy, and I was kind of controlling my whole camp,” Ruiz told Ariel Helwani. “I think because I thought I knew it all.”
Eddy Reynoso officially worked with Ruiz for the Arreola fight, while Alfredo Osuna trained him against Ortiz. His admission suggests those coaches were present without having full authority over his preparation. Ruiz dictated the schedule, postponed work he did not want to complete, and operated as the boss of his own camps.
It also continues a pattern of justifications arriving after disappointing performances. Ruiz blamed partying and poor discipline for the Joshua rematch, revealed that a fractured hand hindered him against Miller, and now says a lack of real oversight contributed to three uneven outings. Elite fighters are supposed to address those issues during camp rather than account for them in interviews long afterward.
Knyba will test how much has truly changed. The 6’7” Polish heavyweight owns an 86-inch reach, giving him a 12-inch advantage over Ruiz. Closing that distance will require head movement, feints, fast feet, and the stamina to apply pressure for more than a few isolated bursts.
The low-output stretches seen against Ortiz and Miller cannot be repeated. If the 36-year-old Ruiz’s legs no longer carry him inside quickly, Knyba can keep him at the end of the jab and force him to reach with his combinations. The hand speed that troubled Joshua loses much of its value when Ruiz cannot get close enough to release it.
Returning to Robles gives him the strict authority figure he chose to ignore elsewhere. Robles demands fitness work and repetition, but the question is whether he can push a 36-year-old millionaire beyond his comfort zone. Their reunion works only with Ruiz accepting instruction when training becomes unpleasant.
No trainer can recover the time already surrendered. The fighter who shocked Joshua was 29. Ruiz has competed only four times in seven years, undergone hand surgery, and burned through much of his prime while fighting approximately once every two years.
Beating Knyba would confirm basic functionality rather than restore Ruiz as a leading contender. Agit Kabayel stopped Knyba in three rounds, leaving Ruiz with little to gain from an ordinary victory. He needs to close distance cleanly, maintain his punch volume, and take command without laboring through the later rounds.
Another difficult performance would leave Matchroom with little reason to place Ruiz in a major fight. He blamed poor discipline after losing the Joshua rematch and now says he directed the camps that came next. Should Knyba expose the same inactivity, physical limitations, and fading output, Ruiz will need another explanation.
