Titanium instead of the mainstream: while most manufacturers rely on a full-carbon monocoque frame, British manufacturer Atherton does things very differently. The A.130.1 uses a lugged frame construction with titanium joints, giving it far more than just a distinctive look. With a total of 22 frame sizes, Atherton also take an uncompromising approach to fit. Hardly any other manufacturer offers such a finely graded sizing system.
With 140/130 mm of travel, the Atherton A.130.1 enters the race as a classic trail bike. In its top-spec variant, it tips the scales at 14.68 kg and, at €10,691.33, is also one of the more expensive bikes in our test field. Atherton have already proven several times that they can do more than build unconventional concepts and good-looking bikes. They can make them perform on the trail, too. The Atherton A150 earned our Best Buy recommendation in our last trail bike group test, while the brand also took the win in the eMTB category more recently with the S.170E. To see whether the A.130.1 can live up to its premium ambitions, it has to prove itself against eleven formidable rivals on the trails around Innsbruck.

Spec and details of the Atherton A.130.1
At first glance, the Atherton A.130.1 already stands apart from the rest of the field. Instead of a conventional carbon monocoque, Atherton use a distinctive method: raw-finish, 3D-printed titanium lugs bonded to unpainted carbon tubes. It gives the bike an unmistakable industrial look and a design language all its own, one we’re taken with. The proportions between the front and rear triangles feel coherent and well-balanced, lending the A.130.1 a surprisingly harmonious look despite its unconventional build.
Atherton stay true to their functional approach with the details too. The entire frame comes standard with a transparent frame protection film, which does a good job of keeping scratches at bay. The chainstay protector is a simple stick-on rubber pad, while the downtube is protected by a robust plastic plate. Neither solution is particularly sophisticated or elegant, but both do their job reliably. Atherton don’t provide any torque markings on the pivot bolts, though.
Another issue is the limited insertion depth of the seat tube. As a result, the dropper post sticks far out of the frame and restricts freedom of movement. On top of that, the dropper on our test bike was extremely difficult to insert and remove. Whether that came down to manufacturing tolerances or a carbon tube not finished quite cleanly inside is impossible to say for certain, but the fit on our test bike wasn’t ideal.
Atherton have gone all out with the spec. The A.130.1 is the flagship model in the range and can be further customised using the online configurator. Our test bike combines premium components with a few genuinely distinctive touches. The suspension consists of a FOX 36 SL Factory fork with GRIP X damper and a matching FOX FLOAT X Factory shock.
One standout component is Atherton’s own A.GR.TI crankset, 3D-printed from titanium. It suits the bike’s unusual frame concept and underlines just how much scope there is for personalisation: the configurator offers 11 crank lengths and three finishes. The titanium seat clamp follows suit, tying in neatly with the striking frame and its 3D-printed titanium lugs.
Hayes Dominion A2 brakes with 203/180 mm Galfer rotors do stopping duties. Despite having just two pistons per caliper, they impress with a clearly defined bite point and plenty of braking power. Shifting is taken care of by a SRAM X0 Eagle AXS Transmission drivetrain, which relies on a direct-mount rear derailleur, and ensures reliable gear shifts even under load.
Not pretty, but effective: The slim chainstay protector might look basic, but it does a great job of keeping noise at bay.The FOX Transfer Factory dropper offers a generous 210 mm of travel, though the limited seat tube insertion depth means the Atherton can’t use all of it. Helpfully, the configurator flags this and caps recommended dropper travel at 180 mm for the size 9 frame we tested. The FSA Gradient cockpit runs a 770 mm carbon handlebar. The Stan’s Flow MK4 aluminium wheels are shod with Continental Kryptotal tires, an Fr Enduro Soft up front and an Re Enduro Soft at the rear. The pairing offers plenty of grip yet rolls surprisingly well, an excellent match for a capable trail bike.

With 470 mm of reach in size 9, the Atherton sits pretty much in the middle of our test field. The rest of the geometry is more distinctive. At 1,221 mm, the wheelbase is one of the shortest in the entire group test, while the 433 mm chainstays are also on the short side and the 617 mm stack is unusually low. The result is a sporty riding position that puts plenty of pressure over the front.
At 65.5°, the head angle is relatively steep compared to the rest of the test field, further contributing to the bike’s direct steering response. The nominal 78° seat tube angle also looks fairly steep on paper, but things are a little more complicated on the Atherton. Due to the pronounced kink in the seat tube, the actual seated position changes significantly depending on the saddle height and frame size. Riders running more seatpost extension will sit further back, resulting in a slacker effective seat tube angle. That makes choosing the right frame size all the more important.
The 3D-printed titanium lugs, along with the titanium seat clamp and cranks, give the Atherton a truly unique look.

The Atherton A.130.1 on the trail
Atherton don’t offer their own suspension calculator or an extensive setup guide. Even so, getting the basic setup dialled in is straightforward thanks to the easily accessible suspension components.
How does the Atherton A.130.1 perform on the climbs?
The riding position on the A.130.1 is pleasantly balanced, neither overly stretched nor too compact. The relatively low front end also puts plenty of pressure on the front wheel, which provides excellent precision on technical climbs and reliably keeps the front end from lifting.
Climbing ace: Low weight, impressive efficiency and huge amounts of traction make the Atherton one of the strongest climbers in the test.The Atherton climbs extremely efficiently, too. The low overall weight, pedal-neutral rear suspension and grippy Continental Enduro tires provide plenty of drive without sacrificing comfort. At the same time, the rear suspension generates exceptional traction, keeping the rear wheel firmly planted even on steep, rooty climbs. Despite its sensitive response, the suspension barely bobs under pedalling and, together with the Specialized Stumpjumper and Yeti MT, makes the Atherton one of the most efficient climbers in the entire test field.
How does the Atherton A.130.1 perform downhill?
A few metres on the trail are enough to show how easy the Atherton is to ride. The handling is deeply intuitive, one of the A.130.1’s biggest strengths. The bike inspires confidence quickly and responds precisely to steering input.
Grip over showboating: Rather than impressing with loads of pop, the Atherton wins you over with huge amounts of traction and suspension that stays remarkably composed even in rough terrain.It’s important not to confuse agility with playfulness, though. The Atherton is highly agile but not especially playful. It reacts eagerly to steering input and, thanks to its compact dimensions, can be flicked quickly from one line to the next. Unlike the Trek Fuel or the Propain Hugene, however, it doesn’t constantly hunt for rollers and kickers to generate pop and airtime. Its agility comes primarily from the handling and compact proportions, while the suspension is clearly tuned to maximise ground contact, traction and control.
Instead, the firm suspension keeps the tires glued to the trail and generates huge amounts of traction. In braking bumps, root sections and steep off-camber terrain in particular, the bike delivers exceptional grip and control.
The balanced weight distribution also gives the Atherton a very secure and composed feel at all times. Another thing that stands out is just how quiet it’s on the trail. The drivetrain, rear suspension and frame protection all keep noise to a minimum, making the A.130.1 one of the quietest bikes in the entire group test. On fast, rough sections especially, this adds to the bike’s premium, controlled feel.
Its composure is particularly impressive. Despite having just 140/130 mm of travel, the Atherton feels far more capable than the numbers suggest and ranks in the upper midfield of our test field in this respect. The FOX 36 SL works brilliantly with the sensitive rear suspension. Both ends respond smoothly, provide plenty of support through the mid-stroke and use their travel effectively without harsh bottom-outs.
The bike’s direct character is sharpened by the stiff cockpit. The carbon handlebars transfer impacts from fast braking bumps and rough terrain directly into your hands and forearms. Combined with the thin ODI grips, the cockpit lacks a little compliance. A more forgiving handlebar or thicker grips would make an already excellent package even better.
The Atherton feels glued to the trail. Hardly any other bike in the test combines this much traction, precision and confidence with such intuitive handling.
Who is the Atherton A.130.1 the right trail bike for?
The Atherton A.130.1 is the ideal choice for riders looking for a precise trail bike with exceptional traction. Its highly intuitive handling, outstanding suspension and impressive climbing efficiency inspire confidence from the very first metre. If you’d rather ride fast, clean lines than pop off every root, the Atherton is one of the strongest contenders in the test field.
The right bike for:
Precision junkies
If you want a bike that responds instantly to steering input and can be placed exactly where you want it with huge amounts of traction, you’ll love the Atherton. Its intuitive handling and excellent suspension inspire confidence from the outset.
Sporty riders
Whether it’s a technical post-work blast or a demanding all-day ride, the Atherton combines excellent pedalling efficiency with surprisingly generous reserves on the descents. Riders who like an active riding style and value a direct, grippy trail bike will find a very capable companion.
Not the right bike for:
Freeriders and pop freaks
If you’re constantly looking to boost rollers, pull manuals and want a particularly playful bike, you’ll be happier with some of the other models in the test field. The Atherton prioritises maximum traction over maximum pop.
Comfort-focused riders
The stiff cockpit, limited compliance and restricted dropper insertion depth make the Atherton less comfortable than some of its competitors. If maximum freedom of movement and long-distance comfort are high on your list, there are better-suited options in the test field.

Conclusions about the Atherton A.130.1
The Atherton’s handling is intuitive and precise, while the rear suspension generates huge amounts of traction and draws impressive performance from just 130 mm of travel. At the same time, it climbs efficiently and inspires confidence on almost any trail. The limited dropper insertion depth and notably stiff cockpit take away some comfort, while some of the simpler details leave room for improvement. In return, you get an exclusive and distinctive trail bike whose performance more than lives up to its distinctive appearance.
