There's no chance of the 'Magnificent 7' repeating itself here, right? Unlike when they sold Gareth Bale and spent rashly, Spurs look to have invested smartly on this occasion.

However, the one negative is that a summer of expenditure like that requires sales. Luka Vuskovic was the headline departure, heading to Brighton & Hove Albion for a whopping £50m.

It was an exit that raised eyebrows at the time and just a matter of weeks into his time on the south coast, it's looking like a mistake to cash in.

Why Spurs will regret selling Luka Vuskovic

In 2023, Tottenham announced the signing of a 16-year-old Vuskovic from Hajduk Split for a fee of £12m. To spend that much on a player who couldn't actually officially play for the club until 2025 was a gamble. Yet, as the summer showed, it turned out to be phenomenal business. Credit to Spurs for that.

However, that doesn't mean it's not a bad decision to sell. Sure, it's a healthy profit but judging by the centre-back's performances in recent seasons and indeed in the opening weeks of the new Premier League campaign, it could come back to haunt them.

Just 19 years of age, Vuskovic has a maturity that belies his age. His performances also belie his age. In 2024/25 on loan at KVC Westerlo in Belgium, he was something of a "goal machine" in the words of scout Antonio Mango.

During his time in the Belgium Pro League, the teenager scored seven times in 36 outings. That remarkable run of form continued on loan at Hamburg in Germany last season.

Vuskovic scored six goals and proved to be a duel monster. During a clash against Union Berlin in September 2025, he won a mind-blowing 18 aerial duels.

To illuminate just how incredible that statistic is, no player has won more aerial duels in a Bundesliga game across the last ten seasons and he was the first player to win 18 aerial duels in a single match in Europe's top five leagues over the last five seasons.

The Croatian hasn't been quite as monstrous at Brighton just yet but is already making himself one of the first names on the team sheet at the Amex. Against Leeds last weekend, Vuskovic scored his first goal for the Seagulls, registered ten defensive contributions and won six duels.

At such a young age, the way in which he has adapted to the English top-flight has been seriously impressive. In a few years time, it would not be a surprise if Fabian Hurzeler's men are able to ship him on for another hefty profit.

That said, it might not be the only mistake of the summer window.

Harry Kane regen is outshining Vuskovic after leaving Spurs

It was a huge summer for Spurs and to offset their purchases, a number of sales simply had to happen.

Some key members of the squad have now left, most notably Cristian Romero. He moved to Atletico Madrid in a £34m switch. Djed Spence also left in a permanent deal, heading to Inter Milan. He has been joined in Italy by Pape Matar Sarr who is on loan at Juventus with an obligation to buy.

It's unlikely any of those three players will be missed hugely and on first impression, it didn't feel as though striker Will Lankshear would be missed either.

Highly-rated at youth level, scoring 26 goals in 35 games for Tottenham's U21 side, he never quite made the grade in the first-team.

Lankshear played six times at senior level for Spurs and only scored once but truthfully, he did not get a fair run in the team. It's a similar situation to Troy Parrott who is now tearing it up in European football. He even scored in the Champions League for Real Betis this week.

Well, Lankshear may not be playing at Europe's top table just yet but like Vuskvovic, this already looks like it may well have been a mistake to sell him. In fact, given their problems in the final third, failing to score this season in the league, it may well have been a bigger error of judgement.

A number of years ago, he was described as a "Harry Kane regen" by one scout, a testimony backed up by the ever-reliable Alasdair Gold too, who has previously suggested that he is "the closest thing to Kane" that the academy had.

Well, he's no longer a Spurs boy. He joined Middlesbrough in a £10m deal over the summer and has made a devastating impact in the Championship for Kim Hellberg's side.

Across his first first eight games for Boro in all competitions, the 21-year-old has scored seven goals. He is leading the race for the Golden Boot in the early stages of the campaign, scoring five times in as many Championship outings.

Lankshear is scoring a goal every 82 minutes, the finest record of any player in the division, while his goal conversion rate of 28% is actually better than Kane's efforts in the Bundesliga last season.

Of course, the young centre-forward is performing at a level below the Premier League right now but Spurs need goals and Lankshear is providing them in abundance. Rather than spending big bucks on Omar Marmoush, perhaps the answer was right in front of them all this time.
