Blackburn have opted to replace Michael O'Neill with a familiar face, naming Mowbray as their new manager last week, and with the 62-year-old set to take charge for the second time, having left upon the expiration of his contract at the end of the 2021-22 season.
Upon being named as O'Neill's replacement, the ex-West Bromwich Albion boss made it clear he is eyeing promotion to the Premier League, saying: “I’ve been back a few times in the past season to watch a few games and it feels like home, especially considering I spent a long time here - five-and-a-half years.
“That’s a long, long time in modern-day football, and we had some good times and felt like we’d built a half-decent team but couldn’t quite get over the line to reach our ambition of getting in the Premier League.
“It almost feels like I’m coming back to finish the job, because the aim of every team in the Championship is to try and get to the Premier League.
However, having been involved in the relegation battle last season, the Rovers may need to bring in some reinforcements if they are going to make a genuine promotion push, and they have now set their sights on a Championship star.
Blackburn want to open talks to sign "set-play specialist"
According to a report from The Northern Echo, Blackburn are now planning to open talks to sign Middlesbrough defender Dael Fry, but the Chamoionship play-off finalists remain in discussions regarding a contract extension, and they are confident he will pen a new deal.
Should negotiations come to a standstill, the Rovers would be eager to swoop in, which could be a concern for Boro manager Kim Hellberg, given that he is said to be a big fan of the centre-back.
Hellberg was full of praise for the Englishman back in March, saying: "He has a lot of qualities and is our best header of the ball, for example. He’s also our best set-play specialist in terms of heading offensively and defensively. He’s a leader in our group and has also very much improved his play on the ball. He has almost everything you’d want in a centre-back and is a very important player for us."
Middlesbrough came agonisingly close to securing a return to the Premier League, and Fry played an important role, making 29 appearances in the Championship, during which time he averaged 11.4 defensive contributions, which is by far the highest number in the squad.
With Mowbray keen for Blackburn to mount a promotion push, the 6 foot 4 star could be an ideal addition to his backline.
