Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayCanelo Alvarez says there is one super middleweight champion he will never face again as he attempts to become undisputed at 168 for a third time.
Canelo is scheduled to challenge WBC champion Christian Mbilli in September, following the retirement of Terence Crawford, which left the division’s titles split between several champions.
The other belts are currently held by Hamzah Sheeraz (WBO), Jaime Munguia (WBA), and Osleys Iglesias (IBF).
Canelo made it clear this weekend that Munguia is off limits because the two now work together under trainer Eddy Reynoso.
“I am not going to fight Munguia again. No. We are on the same team, we like Munguia, he is a great person. He works very hard, we are never going to fight again,” said Canelo to Ring Magazine.
“We are always looking for good fights, big fights, and I think there is other big fights out there.”
Canelo defeated Munguia by unanimous decision in May 2024 in what was the first all-Mexican title defense of his career.
The comments create another obstacle for Canelo’s path back to undisputed status at super middleweight, as Munguia currently holds one of the four major belts.
Canelo became the first undisputed super middleweight champion in boxing history in 2021 after collecting all four titles in less than a year. He later regained undisputed status when he defeated William Scull before losing the belts to Crawford four months later. A fight for the WBA title now appears completely off the table.
