The Clippers have officially moved on from Kawhi Leonard, but the return from Toronto does not erase the long-term damage caused by the NBA’s salary-cap investigation.

Los Angeles received Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, two unprotected first-round picks, a first-round swap and two second-rounders for Leonard. Those assets provide useful pieces for a franchise already moving toward a rebuild.

However, the NBA’s sanctions dramatically weakened the Clippers’ position. The franchise was fined $30 million and stripped of five consecutive first-round picks from 2029 through 2033. Steve Ballmer and Gillian Zucker were each suspended for one year, while Lawrence Frank received a six-month suspension.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver has said he does not believe the penalties caused “permanent damage,” but rebuilding without substantial draft capital presents a major challenge.

The transition had already started before Leonard departed. Los Angeles previously sent James Harden to Cleveland for Darius Garland and traded Ivica Zubac to Indiana in a package that included draft assets.

Following the Leonard deal, the Clippers now have only four first-round selections across the next seven drafts after previously expecting to control as many as nine. The Stepien Rule could further restrict their ability to trade the remaining picks if it applies to forfeited selections.

Still, the roster contains younger and prime-age players who could either become part of the next Clippers team or eventually be moved for additional assets. Ingram and Dick also give the organization two significant pieces from the Leonard trade.

Even with those additions, recovering from the loss of five first-round picks could take years. The Leonard trade gives Los Angeles more resources for its rebuild, but the consequences of the league’s punishment will continue to shape the franchise well into the next decade.
