John Gibson has outlined the Los Angeles Clippers’ path forward after taking over as interim governor and CEO, emphasizing communication, compliance and a comprehensive review of the franchise’s basketball and business operations.

In his first video message to Clippers fans and the organization on Tuesday, September 22, Gibson acknowledged the difficult circumstances surrounding the franchise while stressing that the team must now focus on its next phase.

“Your resolve will be measured not by what we say, but what we do,” Gibson said. “You’ll see that resolve in action in three key areas.”

The first priority, according to Gibson, is building stronger relationships across the organization and the wider basketball community. He said the Clippers will engage with players, coaches, staff, fans, sponsors, business partners, the NBA, fellow governors, the Players Association and local communities.

“We want to hear your concerns. We want your ideas. We want your perspective,” Gibson said. “We will listen with humility. We will act with purpose.”

Gibson also highlighted compliance and accountability as a central focus after the NBA’s investigation into the Clippers’ handling of financial arrangements involving Kawhi Leonard and four companies connected to the franchise.

The NBA suspended owner Steve Ballmer for one year, fined the Clippers $30 million and stripped the organization of first-round picks from 2029 through 2033. Lawrence Frank was suspended for six months without pay, while business president Gillian Zucker received a one-year suspension.

“We will continue working closely with the NBA to ensure strong compliance systems, effective oversight, and the highest professional standards throughout our organization,” Gibson said.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver said September 15 that the penalties represented a setback for the Clippers but were not intended to cause permanent damage to the franchise.

On the basketball side, Gibson confirmed a revised leadership structure while Frank serves his suspension. He appointed Trent Redden as interim president of basketball operations and Mark Hughes as interim general manager, with Tyronn Lue remaining head coach.

“Ty has repeatedly demonstrated the ability to overcome adversity, unite teams, and inspire players to perform at their best,” Gibson said. “His leadership will be instrumental as we move forward.”

The new structure has already overseen a major transition. The Clippers completed their long-delayed trade sending Leonard to the Toronto Raptors on September 14, acquiring Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, two first-round picks, a first-round pick swap and two second-round picks.

Gibson welcomed Ingram and the Clippers’ other offseason additions, including Rui Hachimura and Max Strus, while pointing to a core featuring Darius Garland, Kris Dunn, Derrick Jones Jr., Brook Lopez and No. 5 overall pick Keaton Wagler.

“We are conducting a thoughtful and comprehensive review of both basketball and business operations to ensure every decision supports a winning culture,” Gibson said.

The Clippers enter the season with significantly less draft capital because of the NBA’s penalties, making the evaluation of the current roster and organizational structure particularly important.

Gibson ended his message by insisting that the franchise remains focused on competing while restoring confidence throughout the organization.

“We believe in this team, we believe in this organization, and we believe our best days are still ahead of us,” Gibson said.
