The Diamondbacks announced that they have selected Derek Law‘s contract from Triple-A Reno.  Left-hander Mitch Bratt was also called up from Reno to be the 27th man for today’s doubleheader with the Giants, and southpaw Kohl Drake was optioned to Reno in the corresponding move for Law.  No 40-man roster move was required since Arizona had only 39 players on its 40-man.

Law has pitched at the MLB level for six different clubs over his eight seasons in the Show, and he’ll finally get to add to that total once he makes his first appearance in an Arizona uniform.  Law hasn’t pitched in the majors since September 2024, as he missed all of last season due to arm problems, culminating in a flexor tendon surgery in July 2025.

The right-hander made it back to game action for a couple of Rookie League outings in May, but another setback kept him out of game action until August 12, when Law tossed the first of five Triple-A rehab games.  Over 6 1/3 innings in Reno, Law allowed only five hits without any runs or walks, and the D’Backs felt they’d seen enough to bring the veteran up to the big league bullpen.

What Law can do after such a long layoff remains to be seen, but he has a solid track record (3.69 ERA over 346 career innings) as a Major League reliever.  Never a big strikeout pitcher, Law has found success by limiting hard contact, as he has a career 37.1% hard-hit ball rate.  Law’s most recent MLB season was one of his best, as he posted elite chase and barrel rates while delivering a 2.60 ERA and 48.5% grounder rate over 90 innings for the Nationals in 2024.

The D’Backs would happily take anything close to that as the team looks to bolster its bullpen depth for the stretch run.  Arizona entered today’s action a half-game behind the Padres for the last NL wild card berth, and the Diamondbacks’ 4.44 bullpen ERA since the All-Star break ranks only 23rd of 30 teams.
