Tottenham Hotspur have been left fearing the worst, with Juventus now plotting a shock swoop to sign one of Roberto de Zerbi's star men this summer.
Tottenham facing max exodus this summer
To no one's surprise, Tottenham are set for a frantic summer transfer window at both ends of their business. When it comes to arrivals, they've already signed Andy Robertson and have Marcos Senesi on the way on another free deal. The defensive duo will be part of a much-needed rebuild.
It's a rebuild that will need sacrifices, and the likes of Cristian Romero could provide that. The club captain has been linked with a move to Manchester United and could bow out alongside centre-back partner Micky van de Ven.
After finishing 17th in back-to-back campaigns, though, it wouldn't be absurd to suggest that Spurs would be better off wiping the slate clean rather than pushing to keep wantaway Romero and Van de Ven.
Whether they take a similar mentality if other stars push for an exit remains to be seen, however. If recent rumours are anything to go by, then Juventus are keen to find out.
Juventus plot move to sign Spurs defender
By the end of the summer transfer window, De Zerbi's original backline may not have a single name left standing. According to Gazzetta dello Sport in Italy, as relayed by Sport Witness, Juventus chief Marco Ottolini is now personally driving a 'shock' move to sign Djed Spence from Tottenham.
The sporting director reportedly already has a good relationship with Spence having worked together at Genoa, and now wants to strike an Italian reunion in the coming months.
Juventus are already quietly working on a deal, though there remain question marks over whether Spence is willing to leave North London.
Any decision is likely to take place after the World Cup thanks to the defender's England call. The good news for Spurs, of course, is that the tournament could only enhance Spence's value to fend off any interest from Juventus.
He'd certainly be a hard man to replace, especially at a time when so many stars could be heading for the exit door.
