Doc Rivers has officially closed the door on a return to NBA coaching, shifting his full attention toward broadcasting after a lengthy career on the sidelines.

NBC announced Monday that Rivers will join its NBA coverage as a game analyst across NBC, Peacock and NBCSN. He could also contribute to the network’s studio programming.

Rivers’ coaching career included stops with the Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Clippers, Philadelphia 76ers and Milwaukee Bucks.

His most notable achievement came in 2008, when he guided Boston to an NBA championship. Earlier this year, Rivers was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.

“I honestly can say I’m absolutely retired,” Rivers told the Associated Press in an interview. “I had a long run. It ended up in the [Naismith] Hall of Fame [earlier this year] and I am so thankful that I was able to coach and played as long as I did. For the first time, I can focus on giving TV my 100 percent attention, which I’m really looking forward to.

“I think I’ve always been pretty honest. I’ve always celebrated the game in general, but told the truth. I don’t think anyone has ever had a problem with honesty and the way you tell the truth. There are always times where you offend people because of the truth, but I’ve never really worried about that.”

The move represents familiar territory for Rivers, who already has extensive broadcasting experience.

He worked with Turner Sports from 1996 to 1999 and later had two separate runs with ESPN/ABC during the 2000s. Rivers also served as a studio analyst for NBC during its coverage of the 2012 Olympics.

His new role will also put him alongside his son, Austin Rivers, who is already part of NBC Sports’ analyst team.
