Dustin Poirier continues to leave the door open to fight again despite retiring from pro MMA competition.

Poirier had his retirement fight at UFC 318 on July 19, 2025. He was defeated by Max Holloway via unanimous decision, but he got to compete in front of his Louisiana fans before riding off into the sunset. While many believe it was the right time for “The Diamond” to walk away, he hasn’t been shy in admitting the itch to fight is still there.

Serving as a guest on the “Weighing In” podcast, Poirier told Josh Thomson that a fourth fight against Conor McGregor could be tempting enough to lure him out of retirement (via MMAFighting).

“If it was realistic and they called me and said, ‘Hey,’ I would probably get back in the drug-testing protocol and get licensed again, yeah,” Poirier said.

Poirier and McGregor first did battle at UFC 178 all the way back in 2014. Poirier was stopped in the first round, but their next two encounters played out far differently. “The Diamond” got revenge on McGregor by scoring a second-round knockout win in early 2021. The trilogy fight took place later that same year, and it ended when McGregor suffered a broken leg at the end of the opening frame.

Fast forward to 2026, and Poirier has entered a new phase in his life post-prizefighting.

“It’s a different life,” Poirier said. “I grew up in the fight game, so my whole life was fighting. Every day I’d wake up and want to be better, I’d want to work on techniques, and I’d want to get beat up. Now I’m waking up and just being a dad, running business, life’s different.

“It’s good. Some days I wake up and I really feel like this was the right decision, everything’s where it should be. Some days I wake up and I want to fight because I know I can beat these guys still. I don’t know if that ever goes. I don’t know if that every leaves. I might be 60 years old thinking the same thing, I don’t know, but I still think I can beat these guys.”
