For Liverpool, this summer is playing out rather differently than it did a year ago.

The Reds certainly won the summer transfer window of 2025, throwing the kitchen sink at the market in an attempt to win the Premier League for a successive year.

What played out, however, led to the sacking of Arne Slot.

One year on from Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz arriving for Premier League record fees, Slot was ushered out of Anfield and replaced by Andoni Iraola. You cannot say it wasn't coming.

Iraola has had a few weeks to get his feet under the table now but very few additions have been forthcoming.

As was expected, Jeremy Jacquet has officially joined and Victor Munoz has arrived too after Liverpool hijacked Newcastle's move at the 11th hour. They remain the sole incomings.

Who could Liverpool sign this summer?

Had the business of summer 2025 all gone according to plan, then Richard Hughes and Co would be sat here right now with very little to do.

However, nothing has really gone right for the Merseysiders of late, hence Slot's sacking. A replacement for Mo Salah is the biggest priority.

RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande was the priority target but is widely expected to join PSG. That could well free up another Liverpool target in the shape of Bradley Barcola to seek an exit from the French capital but nothing will be sorted until after the World Cup.

The midfield also appears to be an area of the field where they could do with improvements. Unsurprisingly, Iraola could look towards Bournemouth to steal some of his former players.

Eli Junior Kroupi has been considered, as has midfielder Alex Scott. They could cost a premium. The Cherries no not want to sell and have placed a whopping £80m price tag on his shoulders.

A certain Adam Wharton - valued at £100m in some circles - is also on the radar. As it happens, Emile Heskey has backed those two moves significantly.

Heskey thinks Liverpool could sign £180m pair

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Heskey spoke to us about Liverpool's ongoing business in the market, suggesting that both Wharton and Scott would be brilliant pick ups.

Talking to FFC on behalf of World Cup betting site William Hill, the former Reds striker said: "Andoni Iraola will know Alex Scott’s qualities from Bournemouth, having managed him already, and I can definitely see him making the step up to play for Liverpool."

It's safe to say that the Guernsey-born midfielder was one of the finest players in his position in the league last season. He was not selected by Thomas Tuchel in England's squad for the World Cup but he is a player they rate highly. After all, alongside Rio Ngumoha, Ethan Nwaneri and Josh King, he was part of the pre-tournament squad.

Commenting further on the midfield duo, Heskey said: "A club of Liverpool’s stature comes with different demands though, the levels of expectations there are through the roof. But either Scott, or Adam Wharton, would be a perfect fit for Liverpool."

If they are to sign the pair, they will have to pay big fees. Manchester City's £116m move for Elliot Anderson has broken the transfer market, as has Sandro Tonali's £100m switch to Tottenham Hotspur.

Because of that, Heskey believes that one Liverpool icon would be worth a world-record fee right now.

He said: "It makes you wonder what Steven Gerrard’s price tag would be in the current game, it would be more than £200m, that’s for sure."

For now, the future remains unclear in the market but either way, the midfield duo could be fabulous pick ups.
