The possible future of Giannis Antetokounmpo with the Milwaukee Bucks may become one of the clearest examples of how NBA teams are reevaluating the value of draft picks under the league’s proposed lottery changes.

As speculation grows around what it could take to acquire Antetokounmpo, interested teams may hesitate before giving up massive packages of future first-round selections.

With more teams projected to receive stronger lottery odds under the proposed format, those picks are no longer viewed as expendable assets as easily as before.

League executives are also pointing to the recent experience of the Indiana Pacers as a warning sign.

Indiana lost its top-four protected first-round pick to the Los Angeles Clippers after the selection landed fifth in the lottery.

That pick was connected to February’s Ivica Zubac trade, and the outcome reinforced the danger of attaching future draft capital to major deals.

With the lottery potentially rewarding a wider range of teams, franchises may now think twice before sacrificing future picks – even when pursuing superstar talent.
