The Guardians announced yesterday that first baseman/outfielder CJ Kayfus sustained both a fracture and ligament damage in his right ankle during a Triple-A game last Sunday.  Kayfus underwent surgery to fix the injuries and will miss the remainder of the 2026 season, though the club expects him to be ready for the start of Spring Training.

The news officially rules Kayfus out as a potential second-half call-up for the Guards, though it wasn’t clear if he was on the radar for another trip to the majors.  Kayfus began the season on Cleveland’s roster and hit .182/.280/.364 over 25 plate appearances before being sent down to Triple-A Columbus, where he has a modest .240/.352/.353 slash line and three homers over 199 PA.

A third-round pick for the Guardians in the 2023 draft, Kayfus posted much stronger numbers in his first three minor league seasons.  He batted .300/.390/.539 with 14 home runs over 369 PA between the Double-A and Triple-A levels in 2025, and this hot stretch led to both some top-100 prospect attention last summer and his first ticket to the big leagues.  Kayfus hit .220/.292/.415 with four home runs over 138 PA with the Guardians in 2025, while striking out 38 times.

Cleveland remains so thin in the corner outfield slots (and on offense in general) that Kayfus might have been able to get himself another look in the Show if he had started hitting.  His bat had started to pick up a bit after an extended cold stretch in May and June, but he’ll now have to wait until Spring Training to battle for what might be a bench spot at best on the 26-man roster.  Because the injury occurred in the minors, Kayfus also naturally won’t accumulate any MLB service time during his recuperation period.
