Leeds United supporters who stayed up late to watch their team's friendly with Wrexham on Saturday night may have been left questioning their decision.

The Whites lost 3-2 to Championship side Wrexham, conceding to Kieffer Moore in the opening minute of the match, but friendly results are largely irrelevant.

Whilst the performance and result were not ideal for supporters watching on, Harry Wilson's early assist for Joel Piroe on his first outing for the club was encouraging.

The Wales international provided seven assists in the Premier League for Fulham last season, and Daniel Farke will be hoping that he produces some much-needed creativity for the club.

Why Leeds need more creativity in their squad

Leeds need to add more quality to the group and improve the creativity in the team if they want to kick on and compete for a European place next season, rather than settling for battling against relegation back down to the Championship.

No player in the squad created more than 4.51 xA or delivered more than five assists in the Premier League for the German head coach in the 2025/26 campaign, which shows that they lacked an outstanding individual creator.

The Whites have not had a truly magical individual creator in their team since they had Georginio Rutter in the Championship in the 2023/24 campaign, as he racked up six goals and 15 assists in the division that term.

Prior to his £40m move to Brighton & Hove Albion in the summer of 2024, the French attacking midfielder was a wizard in the number ten position for Farke, as he consistently created high-quality chances for his teammates in the second tier.

Unfortunately, though, he only started one Premier League match in his career at Elland Road and did not get the chance to show off his creative talents on the biggest stage for the club.

Leeds make offer to sign their next Rutter

Whilst Rutter is long gone and shining for Brighton in the top-flight, Elland Road could play host to the second coming of the French star if the 49ers land one of their key targets.

Journalist Luca Bendoni reports that Leeds United have made an offer to sign Julian Brandt on a free transfer on a three-year contract in the summer transfer window.

The reporter claims that the Whites and Dutch giants Ajax are both competing for the Germany international, but Leeds are winning the race because of the player's interest in playing in the Premier League.

He adds, though, that the former Borussia Dortmund playmaker is also interested in the Serie A, which means that the Whites could face a challenge for his signature if any teams from Italy attempt to hijack their deal.

The 49ers must now push to convince the 48-cap Germany star to sign a contract with the club before any Serie A sides have the chance to make a move for him, because he would be a terrific addition to the squad.

Brandt's arrival at Elland Road would end any concerns about a lack of creativity in the squad, particularly in the number ten position, because he has the quality to be the second coming of Rutter in West Yorkshire.

The 30-year-old star created 11 or more 'big chances' in six of his seven seasons with Dortmund, whilst no Leeds player created more than nine 'big chances' in the Premier League last season.

Even prior to signing for Dortmund, Brandt racked up ten goals, 15 'big chances' created, and 11 assists in all competitions in his last campaign with Bayer Leverkusen.

The Leeds target has hit double figures for 'big chances' created in nine of the last ten seasons for Leverkusen and Dortmund combined, which shows that he is a consistent and proven creator who would arrive in West Yorkshire to significantly bolster Farke's creative ranks.

Brandt has proven himself in the Bundesliga over the past decade, shining week-in-week-out as both a scorer and a creator of goals, and appears to be exactly what Leeds need in their midfield.

A lack of creativity will not be an issue for the Whites next season if they have Brandt in their squad, given that he has created a mammoth 55 'big chances' in the last three seasons combined.

Leeds would finally have their replacement for Rutter in the number ten position, two years after his move to Brighton, which is why the club must ensure that they get over the finish line in this race for the German star.
