It has emerged this week that Glasgow Rangers are on the verge of selling forward Oliver Antman to Belgian outfit Anderlecht for a fee of £4.5m.

The Light Blues paid £3.5m to sign the winger from Go Ahead Eagles last year and are now set to bank a £1m profit on the Finland international in the coming days.

He is due to depart before Derek McInnes' side kick off their Scottish Premiership campaign against Dundee United at Tannadice on Friday night, ending his Ibrox career after just 12 months.

Antman was signed by Russell Martin and Kevin Thelwell last summer and did not seem to fit in with what Danny Rohl was trying to do after he replaced Martin in the dugout.

Rangers signed the forward off the back of him assisting a whopping 17 goals in all competitions for Go Ahead Eagles in the 2024/25 campaign, which made him an exciting addition on paper.

He regularly provided assists for the Dutch side, though, because he was given space to work with on the flank to put crosses into the box, either on the counter-attack or by the team creating space for him to put balls in.

Antman was not afforded the same space to cross the ball for Rangers because Scottish Premiership teams typically sit deep and close space around their own box, which meant that it was harder for him to put quality crosses in.

As a right-winger, the forward also had cross-heavy James Tavernier playing behind him at right-back and the Gers captain constantly pushed forward to take any space that there was on the flank, forcing the Finnish attacker inside.

Antman was ineffective when drifting infield when Tavernier overlapped, though, as he is a right-footed player who was then given awkward angles to work with coming in from the right.

The Scottish giants needed a left-footed forward in that role to suit how the team set up tactically, and they are now looking at a player who would be a much better fit than the Finland international.

Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph reports that Glasgow Rangers are interested in a deal to sign winger Jahnoah Markelo from Premier League side Coventry City this summer.

The reporter claims that the Light Blues have already opened club-to-club talks with the English side about a move for the forward, who signed for the Sky Blues for just over £4m (£4.3m) in January from FC Zurich.

Joseph adds that the Gers had looked at the Suriname forward last year under a previous manager, before he moved to England at the start of the year.

The Premiership side must now push to get a deal done for Markelo, whether it is on loan or on a permanent basis, because he has the potential to be a much better option than Antman on the right flank.

For starters, the 23-year-old attacker is a left-footed right winger and that opens up more possibilities for him at Ibrox, as he can drift inside onto his favoured foot from the right, rather than being forced onto his weak foot as Antman was when he came infield.

Markelo's form for FC Zurich in the Swiss Super League before signing for Coventry also suggests that he has the potential to offer more quality at the top end of the pitch.

Antman only provided one goal and three assists in 16 appearances in the Premiership for the Light Blues, scoring in a 5-1 win over Kilmarnock, which shows that he rarely produced quality in the final third.

Six goals and 15 'big chances' created in 26 starts for FC Zurich, though, shows that Markelo could be an exciting attacker for the Gers if they can get him firing on the right flank.

The left-footed star only made five substitute appearances for Coventry after he joined a settled side that was pushing for promotion from the Premier League, so his lack of goal contributions in England is not a major concern.

His form for FC Zurich in Switzerland and his superior tactical profile as a left-footed right winger, though, suggests that he could quickly arrive at Ibrox as the perfect replacement for Antman.
