Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayFilip Hrgovic stopped Moses Itauma at 2:27 of the ninth round to win the vacant IBF heavyweight title Saturday night at The O2 Arena in London. Itauma’s corner threw in the towel after the exhausted 21-year-old collapsed into the corner under Hrgovic’s late pressure.
Itauma needed to be removed from the ring on a stretcher after the fight. His condition was not immediately disclosed, but the scene underscored how completely his body had emptied during the closing stages.
Itauma Builds an Early Lead
The opening rounds belonged to Itauma. His speed, combination punching and body work gave Hrgovic difficulty, and a second-round knockdown suggested the fight might end like so many of Itauma’s previous outings.
Hrgovic absorbed the punishment without allowing Itauma to remove him. The Croatian kept advancing, forcing the younger heavyweight to continue working at a pace he had never sustained over a long professional fight. Unofficial scoring had Itauma comfortably in front through eight rounds, but the scorecards became irrelevant once his conditioning failed.
Hrgovic Waits Out the Storm
Itauma had never boxed beyond six rounds before facing an experienced heavyweight who refused to break. His punches lost force, his movement slowed, and his defensive shape deteriorated as the fight crossed into unfamiliar territory.
Hrgovic recognized the change and attacked from the start of the ninth. Itauma tried to answer with a right hand, staggered backward and fell into the corner with almost nothing left. Trainer Ben Davison immediately stopped the contest.
The finish exposed the danger hidden by Itauma’s carefully managed rise. Early knockouts displayed his speed and power but never answered how he would react when a durable opponent survived the assault and forced him to fight while exhausted.
Hrgovic supplied that answer. He took Itauma’s best punches, recovered from the knockdown, and allowed the younger man to spend his energy chasing a finish that never arrived. Experience and endurance ultimately decided the fight.
The win makes Hrgovic Croatia’s first heavyweight world champion.
