Alex Bregman's struggles continue in Cubs' loss to Giants

Since Alex Bregman signed  a five-year, $175 million contract with the Chicago Cubs in the offseason, his offensive struggles have led to an all-time low in his career.

Expectations were set high when he signed with the Cubs, but he hasn't been able to break out of his slump. On Sunday, he went 0-for-5 in the Cubs' 2-1 loss to the San Francisco Giants

According to ESPN's Jesse Rogers, Bregman owned up to his offensive struggles.

"I need to play better. Offensively, it's been awful. I've failed many times in this game. I've struggled. I've started slow before. I've started fast before. When you're struggling, there is only one way forward and that's straight, head-on through it. It comes down to executing in the game."

"I haven't executed all year. Runners in scoring position, I've been god awful."

Pinpointing Alex Bregman's struggles this season

A key factor that has contributed to Bregman's struggles has been his inability to make contact with breaking balls. Pitchers are pounding him with breaking balls at a career-high 40.1% and he is batting only .144 with a 31% whiff rate against them. He has also generated a career-high 41.3% groundball rate

His 15 extra-base hits and .342 slugging percentage have led to a .302 Weighted On-Base Average (wOBA) which are all career-lows for the three-time All-Star.

On the season, he is batting .243 with a .669 OPS and five home runs He is also hitting a measly .178 with RISP, which has led to him consistently leaving runners on base, contributing to the Cubs' offensive power outage.
