Jalen Duren appears likely to eventually reach a contract agreement with the Detroit Pistons, but questions are already being raised about how long he could remain with the franchise.

Brett Siegel of Clutch Points believes Duren could become a trade candidate at some stage even if the two sides resolve their current contract dispute.

According to Siegel, Duren’s camp does not feel sufficiently “valued” by Detroit, particularly amid reports that the organization considers Ausar Thompson its second-most-important long-term building block behind Cade Cunningham.

For now, negotiations reportedly remain at a standstill, while Detroit has shown no interest in exploring a sign-and-trade involving the 22-year-old center.

Duren is reportedly seeking at least $40 million annually on his next contract. However, his status as a restricted free agent gives the Pistons significant leverage.

Detroit’s latest proposal is believed to be worth approximately $35 million per season.

The situation could also be influenced by Amen Thompson’s new five-year, $208 million extension with the Houston Rockets.

Siegel suggested that deal may strengthen Duren’s determination to secure a similar contract after earning an All-Star selection last season.

Meanwhile, Ausar Thompson is expected to command considerably less than his twin brother when negotiating his own rookie-scale extension.

Siegel projects his annual salary could fall somewhere between $25 million and $32 million.

Committing major long-term money to both Duren and Thompson would also create financial complications for Detroit, potentially pushing the Pistons toward the second apron in future seasons.

Even if Duren signs a new deal, therefore, speculation about his long-term future with the franchise may continue.
