Jonathan Kuminga turned down significantly larger monetary offers from the Los Angeles Lakers, Portland Trail Blazers and Chicago Bulls this week in favor of a two-year, $12 million deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Agent Aaron Turner said money did not factor into Kuminga's decision this time around, describing a direct conversation with his client about priorities.

"We sat at the gym this week, and I asked him, what's the best basketball situation?" Turner said. "He said Minnesota. Well, nothing else matters. Why would you go anywhere else?"

The decision could reshape how Kuminga is viewed around the NBA. Kuminga had previously been perceived by some as more focused on individual scoring opportunities than team fit during a contentious stretch with the Golden State Warriors that preceded his February trade to the Atlanta Hawks.

The contract includes a player option for 2027-28, giving Kuminga a path back to free agency next summer if larger offers emerge.

Anthony Edwards played a central role in recruiting Kuminga to Minnesota, centering his pitch on the team's defensive identity rather than scoring chances.

"Ant was super active in the recruitment of him," Turner said. "One thing he did was focus his message on, we're gonna really guard here. Everybody looked at the offensive end. JK and I looked more at the defensive end."

Kuminga's recruitment also included a Miami dinner with team president of basketball operations Tim Connelly, direct outreach from owner Alex Rodriguez, and messages from teammates LaMelo Ball and Jaden McDaniels.
