Talks between the Los Angeles Lakers and free agent Jonathan Kuminga have stalled, with both sides far apart on contract terms, according to team sources. The Athletic has reported on the Lakers' interest in Kuminga since late June, but the team has shown little motivation to commit significant draft capital toward a sign-and-trade to complete a deal.

Despite the stalled momentum, Kuminga remains viewed as the top remaining upside play on the free agent market and could re-emerge as a Lakers target if his market stays cool. League sources indicated the Cleveland Cavaliers are the team most frequently connected to Kuminga aside from the Lakers. The Cavaliers are awaiting a decision from LeBron James before possibly pivoting to Kuminga.

The Atlanta Hawks previously declined their $24.3 million team option on Kuminga for the 2026-27 season. He played last season on a $22.5 million contract following a prolonged restricted free agency process with the Golden State Warriors.

The Lakers have also shown interest in free agent Matisse Thybulle, a top-tier defensive wing who has developed into an effective catch-and-shoot threat during his time with the Portland Trail Blazers.

Sources also indicated the Lakers continue monitoring the market for size at center. The team already acquired Walker Kessler via sign-and-trade and signed Kevon Looney to bolster that position, with Sandro Mamukelashvili also capable of playing center.
