Josh Padley successfully defended his EBU European super featherweight title on Saturday night, edging Aqib Fiaz by split decision in a competitive main event at Sheffield Arena in Sheffield, England.

Padley and Fiaz battled through 12 closely contested rounds in a fight that featured momentum swings, blood and controversy. The fight remained close throughout the 12 rounds and included several warnings from referee Kevin Parker for low blows.

In the 11th round, Parker deducted a point from Fiaz after issuing multiple warnings during the contest. The deduction became significant when the scorecards were announced. With the fight closely contested on the scorecards, that deduction became a major factor in the final outcome.

Padley finished strongly down the stretch and was awarded the victory by scores of 115-112 and 114-113, while the third judge scored the contest 114-113 for Fiaz.

The win improved Padley’s record to 19-1 and allowed him to retain the European title after one of the toughest fights of his career.

Earlier on the card, heavyweight prospect Leo Atang continued his rapid rise with another early stoppage victory.

The unbeaten 19-year-old needed less than one round to defeat Fouad Shaili, ending the contest at 2:30 of the opening round.

Atang established control with his jab before trapping Shaili along the ropes and landing a series of right hands. Referee Kieran McCann stepped in to halt the action after Shaili absorbed several unanswered shots.

The victory improved Atang’s record to 7-0 with six knockouts and marked yet another quick finish for one of Matchroom’s emerging heavyweight prospects.

While Padley was forced to go the full 12 rounds in a grueling championship battle, Atang’s work was completed almost as soon as it began, giving Sheffield fans two very different victories to remember on the same night.
