Khamzat Chimaev’s recent comments suggest that he’s okay with not getting an immediate title rematch.
Sean Strickland dethroned Chimaev at UFC 328 by split decision, after which “Borz” postponed his plans of moving up to the light heavyweight division and called out Strickland numerous times for a rematch. However, Strickland has other plans.
He wants to defend his title against top contender Nassourdine Imavov, whom “Tarzan” has beaten already by unanimous decision in 2023.
Strickland wants Chimaev to return to winning ways before getting another title shot, and Chimaev’s latest comments suggest that he is game to secure a win over a top contender before attempting to reclaim the middleweight title.
Most recently, there have been rumors that Imavov will run it back with current and two-time UFC middleweight champion Sean Strickland in December at UFC 335. “The Sniper” has also claimed that the UFC brass has promised him the next title shot. Reacting to the same, Chimaev, in an interview with Ushatayka, said:
“There’s no surprise. How long has Imavov been waiting now? He’s already the contender. Whoever wins, we’ll take him.”
The Chechen-born Emirati also added he’s not going to move up to 205 pounds until he dismantles everybody at 185 pounds.
“Until we break everybody at 185 [pounds], I am not going anywhere.”
