The tale of Georginio Rutter is an example of just why patience is needed with new arrivals, the Frenchman having endured a difficult start to life at Leeds United.

Plucked from Germany on a then-club-record deal in January 2023, the fleet-footed forward made just one Premier League start in his first six months at Elland Road, having even dropped back into the U21 ranks at one stage.

By the summer of 2024, he'd been sold on to Brighton and Hove Albion following a stunning 2023/24 campaign in the Championship, forming such a dazzling duo alongside Crysencio Summerville.

How Leeds' attack has evolved since Rutter

In that 2023/24 season, with Farke arriving in the dugout, the Whites very much operated in a 4-2-3-1 formation, flitting between Joel Piroe and Rutter as the spearhead of the attack.

The former Hoffenheim man could seemingly thrive all across the frontline, in truth, racking up six goals and a standout 15 assists that year, while the promotion hopefuls were particularly potent on the flanks with Summerville and Dan James registering 28 and 20 goal involvements, respectively.

The introduction of Manor Solomon that summer helped to ease the blow of losing Summerville out wide, while Piroe really stepped up to the plate in front of goal, scoring 19 times as Farke's men powered their way back into the Premier League.

It could be said that even last term, the maverick, game-changing quality that Rutter brought to the table was still absent, the shift to a back five putting more onus on the leading figure of Dominic Calvert-Lewin in attack, rather than those in behind him.

Noah Okafor scored eight times, while Brenden Aaronson chipped in with four, yet everything feels built around Calvert-Lewin or Lukas Nmecha, the centre-forward pair scoring 20 times between them.

The flair of Rutter and co has been replaced by a more workmanlike, yet undoubtedly effective, frontline, although Farke does appear to have tried to tip the balance this summer.

Harry Wilson should provide a little more spark in support of the central striker, and he's not alone in that sense either.

Why Leeds might have finally found their new Rutter

Across the division, there have been so many signings made within the Premier League, with sporting directors and managers intent on acquiring players who can make an immediate impact.

Wilson and James Trafford fit the mould in that regard, following their respective moves from Fulham and Manchester City, with supporters no doubt aware of what to expect from the pair.

There is a little more intrigue, therefore, surrounding those who have come from further afield, the decision to snap up Eintracht Frankfurt starlet, Jean-Matteo Bahoya having certainly raised eyebrows.

The 21-year-old signed on deadline day on an initial loan deal, with Leeds holding the option to buy for a fee of around £19.7m, plus add-ons.

Like Rutter, the young forward is another exciting, French arrival from the Bundesliga, with there already a sense of intrigue regarding what he can bring to the table.

Most notably, in a similar mould to Rutter, Bahoya will provide Farke's forward line with a real game-changer in terms of his pace and acceleration, having set the record in 2024/25 for the fastest ever sprint speed in the Bundesliga.

He's approaching Usain Bolt levels in that regard, such a dynamic, explosive forward who could terrorise Premier League defences if given the opportunity to run in behind.

Like Rutter's arrival three years ago, Leeds are largely banking on potential rather than anything proven, although Bahoya did rack up seven goals and assists in Germany's top flight last term, having contributed to five goals the year prior.

Last season also saw Bahoya impress in terms of his one-versus-one ability, averaging 1.5 successful dribbles per game from his 15 league starts.

For context, Rutter's final full season at Hoffenheim saw him average 1.1 in that regard, albeit while having been just ahead in terms of goal involvements, with ten chalked up that year.

Where the pair do perhaps differ is positionally, and while Rutter has regularly operated out wide in recent times, he is a number ten or false nine by trade.

In Bahoya's case, the youngster is a very much an out-and-out left-winger, even hailed as being a "[Bradley] Barcola regen" by analyst and content creator, Filipe Sousa.

The actual Barcola is hoping to make a splash at Liverpool following his £123m switch from Paris Saint-Germain, with expectations high at Anfield surrounding this two-time Champions League winner.

The pressure on Bahoya's shoulders isn't quite so intense, yet if given time to bed in and develop, just as Rutter was in 2023, it might not be long before he is ripping it up at Elland Road.
