Marcos Maidana believes a rematch between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao would resemble their original 2015 fight. Maidana expects both fighters to look slower because of their age, but he still sees the styles producing a similar result.
Maidana said both men have earned the right to continue fighting if they still want to compete.
“[I think it is] good. They can still be in boxing, and if they can fight, it is okay for them to fight,” said Maidana to Fight Hub TV.
Maidana knows Mayweather’s style as well as almost anyone. He fought him twice in 2014 and gave him one of the toughest nights of his career in their first meeting. Some fans felt Maidana had done enough to win that fight after backing Mayweather up and roughing him up on the inside over 12 rounds.
The rematch later that year was more one-sided, with Mayweather adjusting and boxing more cautiously to secure a clearer decision victory.
Because of that experience, Maidana believes the second Pacquiao fight will probably look a lot like the first one, only slower because of their age.
“I think it is going to be the same, maybe a little slower because they are a little bigger, but I think that, the way they both fight, is going to be the same,” said Maidana.
That prediction probably will not excite fans hoping for a war in the rematch. The first fight was heavily criticized for its lack of action after years of hype, with Mayweather controlling the pace behind his defense and movement while Pacquiao struggled to land consistently.
Mayweather has not fought professionally since stopping Conor McGregor in 2017, although he has stayed active in exhibition bouts. He is also reportedly being lined up for another exhibition against Mike Zambidis in June.
