Hours after the New York Mets confirmed that catcher Francisco Alvarez could miss roughly two months of action due to a meniscus tear, Mets star outfielder Juan Soto exited what became Wednesday's 3-2 10-inning win over the Detroit Tigers in the seventh inning after he fouled a ball off the top of his right foot in the bottom of the third inning.

In a refreshing change of pace for the Mets, they managed to avoid a disaster regarding Soto's long-term status.

Mets get good Juan Soto news after injury scare

"We got good news there," Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said about Soto following the victory, per Robert Sanchez of SNY and Jorge Castillo of ESPN. "He’s day-to-day, so we’ll see how he comes tomorrow and whether he’s a player for us and in the starting lineup, but we’ll see."

The Mets next host the Tigers on Thursday afternoon, but Soto's availability for that lone contest isn't as important for New York as is the fact that he apparently won't be sidelined for long. The 17-25 Mets remain in last place in the National League East standings and were already missing Alvarez, shortstop Francisco Lindor (calf), first baseman Jorge Polanco (wrist/Achilles) and center fielder Luis Robert Jr. (back) from the lineup before Soto went down.

Most notably, it doesn't seem like Lindor's return is imminent. Thus, this Mets team can't afford to lose any more key contributors, let alone the one who is supposed to be its best slugger. Earlier this spring, Soto spent more than two weeks on the injured list due to a right calf strain.

Carlos Mendoza seemed to fear the worst

"I was concerned as soon as he got hit because he got him pretty good there," Mendoza added about Soto. "We went out there, and you could tell that he was in pain. And then just that second at-bat didn’t look right. And then when I saw the trainer came my way, I knew something was up… So I’m glad that we got good news."

Following Thursday's MLB action, the Mets will open a three-game series versus the New York Yankees (27-17) at Citi Field on Friday evening.
