New York Mets interim manager Andy Green recently acknowledged that he plans to play outfielder Luis Robert Jr. "two out of every three days and in center field" ahead of the Aug. 3 (6 p.m. ET) MLB trade deadline.

As Dan Martin of the New York Post noted, Robert is one of a handful of players expected to be traded by the 43-60 Mets over the next week or so. Martin also mentioned that promising youngsters Carson Benge and A.J. Ewing could temporarily lose out on playing time while the Mets place Robert in the figurative window. 

Mets can only play Luis Robert Jr. for so long

"I understand why they’re doing it, as long as it’s just until the [trade] deadline. But it still doesn’t look great," one unnamed National League scout told Martin about the Mets playing Robert. "Having those two rookies out there is about all that’s worth paying attention to, but their development isn’t gonna be impacted by a few days out of the lineup in July. It just can’t go on later [in the season]."

Robert missed more than two months of action this season due to a spine issue. Over his first 27 regular-season games with the Mets, he slashed .211/.306/.337 with a .642 OPS, three home runs and nine RBI.

Nevertheless, Robert reportedly "is generating preliminary interest from multiple teams." It's assumed the Mets will sell him to the highest bidder before the trade deadline arrives at 6 p.m. ET on Aug. 3. 

Scout shares gloomy outlook for Mets' future

On Friday night, the Mets will open a three-game series versus the 65-38 Los Angeles Dodgers. When those two clubs faced off in the 2024 National League Championship Series, it was thought that the Mets would soon follow in the footsteps of the Dodgers as it pertains to competing for World Series championships. 

Instead, the Mets seem to be on the cusp of yet another roster reset. 

"Who’s their first baseman next season? Second baseman in two or three years? Third? They’ve shown you can’t just trade or sign those guys that easily," the scout added about the Mets. "The Dodgers have shown the ability to find the right guys to fill out their team. The Mets haven’t."

Along with answering such questions, the Mets may also need to improve their culture before the next MLB season gets underway.
