The much-anticipated T20I series between India and Ireland gets underway today, marking the beginning of a fresh chapter for both teams under new leadership. While wicketkeeper-batter Lorcan Tucker takes charge of the Irish side, India will be led by Shreyas Iyer in the three-match series. The contest also carries added excitement with teenage sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi expected to feature prominently after earning a place in the squad. As fans eagerly await the opening clash, former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif has shared his preferred playing XI for the first T20I, making a few bold selection calls.

Mohammad Kaif reveals his India XI for the first T20I

Kaif has entrusted the opening responsibilities to Sanju Samson and young batting prodigy Suryavanshi. The move reflects Kaif’s confidence in the fearless approach of the teenager, who has generated significant buzz ahead of the series.

Instead of promoting Abhishek Sharma as an opener, Kaif slotted the left-hander at No. 3, allowing him to play the aggressor once the field restrictions ease. Captain Shreyas Iyer occupies the No. 4 position, followed by Tilak Varma and Shivam Dube, giving India a balanced middle order capable of accelerating against both pace and spin.

Axar Patel has been picked as the all-rounder at No. 7, providing depth with both bat and ball. The bowling attack comprises Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna and leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi, giving India a combination of pace, bounce and wicket-taking spin options.

Mohammad Kaif’s India XI for the first game: Sanju Samson, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Abhishek Sharma, Shreyas Iyer (captain), Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna and Ravi Bishnoi.

Ishan Kishan’s omission sparks debate

One of the biggest talking points from Kaif’s selection is the absence of Ishan Kishan. While the former India batter showed faith in the young Suryavanshi by handing him an opening berth, Kishan’s omission is likely to divide opinion among fans and experts alike.

Kishan has become a regular member of India’s T20I setup in recent months and played an important role in the team’s triumphant ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign. His aggressive batting at the top of the order and ability to shift momentum quickly have made him one of India’s key white-ball players.

Despite those credentials, Kaif opted to retain Sanju Samson behind the stumps while overlooking Kishan altogether. The decision highlights the intense competition for places in India’s batting lineup, especially with several young players pushing for regular opportunities.
