The UFC’s annual celebration of Mexican Independence Day weekend saw the Octagon head to Glendale, Arizona, where the fans inside Desert Diamond Arena were treated to an action-packed night of fights, with a hat-trick of notable Mexican winners.

1. Tommy McMillen

After his last fight – a victory over Alberto Montes – undefeated featherweight prospect Tommy McMillen called for a fight against Mexican opposition at Noche UFC. He didn’t get a Mexican opponent, but in Marwan Rahiki he got one who helped push him to new heights as the pair battled back and forth in the best fight of the night.

McMillen’s performance on the night stole the show as he and Rahiki battled all the way to the scorecards, though this wasn’t a fight that left anyone disappointed when it went the distance.

The action was non-stop for the full three, five-minute round duration, and McMillen’s big final round proved enough for him to take the unanimous decision on the scorecards.

He’s rough, tough, in your face, and exactly as advertised. Whenever he fights, it’s must-see TV. And being in the featherweight division, there’s no shortage of potentially explosive matchups in his future as he looks to make his way up the 145-pound ladder.

2. Jean Silva

After losing out to Diego Lopes at Noche UFC in San Antonio last year, Brazilian featherweight contender Jean Silva was doubly determined to produce a memorable display this time around. And, after a slightly bizarre start, he did exactly that.

After a first round where he barely threw a single strike, Silva sparked into life in Round 2, before going on to take Jose Miguel Delgado to the canvas and submit him with a one-armed rear-naked choke.

After his win, he jumped the Octagon fence and presented UFC CBO Hunter Campbell his MMA gloves as “a gift from your next champion”. His performance earned him a $100,000 post-fight bonus, but what he really wants is a shot at the undisputed featherweight title…

3. Alexa Grasso

Proudly repping Mexico, Alexa Grasso served up a timely reminder that she has no intention of leaving the stage as the former women’s flyweight champion defeated former title challenger Manon Fiorot to keep herself firmly in the championship mix at 125 pounds.

Grasso decked Fiorot with a peach of a punch, and used her more well-rounded skillset to earn the unanimous decision victory and show the world that she’s still a serious championship threat.

And with the newly-vacated flyweight belt set to be contested between Natalia Silva and Wang Cong, Grasso’s big performance might just have put her next in line to face the winner.

4. Brandon Moreno

Another Mexican former champion looking to make a statement, former two-time flyweight world champion Brandon Moreno was pushed hard by Joseph Morales in their three-round bantamweight matchup, but “The Assassin Baby” did enough to earn the victory via split decision.

Moreno said before the fight that he believes he’s still the best flyweight on the planet, and against a tricky, in-form opponent, he showed that he can find a way to win in a difficult matchup as he earned scores of 30-27, 30-27, 28-29 to claim the victory and keep himself among the division’s top contenders.

5. David Martinez

David Martinez is looking to break into the top bracket of contenders at the sharp end of the UFC bantamweight division, and on Saturday night he was asked to welcome seasoned former featherweight veteran Dan Ige to the 135-pound division.

It was a fight where he wasn’t facing a higher-ranked opponent, but it was a matchup that carried plenty of peril for the Mexican, who ran the risk of losing his ranking spot had he performed badley against the longtime featherweight contender.

But in a spot where he was asked to deliver, Martinez did so, as he outworked Ige over the three-round duration to earn scores of 30-27, 30-27, 29-28 for a unanimous decision victory.

It took Martinez’s impressive win streak to 11. And after earning successive decision victories over respected, seasoned opposition like Rob Font, Marlon Vera and now Ige, the time has come for Martinez to take on elite opposition, and a chance to prove that he’s ready for a title shot.
