Ipswich Town couldn't have asked for a more dramatic start to their Premier League return on Saturday. The Tractor Boys left it late, but secured a last-gasp victory over Sunderland, courtesy of Jack Clarke's effort.
REUTERS/Dylan MartinezIt was a moment of relief for Gary O'Neil, who would have been desperate for a fast start after so much investment at Portman Road this summer. As many as 12 fresh faces have arrived in Suffolk as Ipswich look to follow the blueprint left behind by Sunderland last season on how to secure Premier League survival.

The spending isn't done quite yet, either. Up next looks to be Exequiel Palacios. The Bayer Leverkusen man may even be the best signing yet from the Tractor Boys.
An invincible title winner at Bayer Leverkusen during the 2023/24 campaign and a World Cup winner with Argentina, Palacios would offer invaluable experience to a relatively inexperienced dressing room.
Meanwhile, on the pitch, the 27-year-old is certainly more than capable. Having made 25 appearances for Leverkusen last season, with five of those coming in the Champions League, the midfield would play a key part under O'Neil.
Ipswich closing in on Exequiel Palacios deal
REUTERS/Marco BelloAs reported by Argentine journalist Renzo Pantich and relayed by Sport Witness, Ipswich have now launched a third offer to sign Palacios and are on the verge of an agreement with Bayer Leverkusen.
The latest offer from Portman Road is believed to be worth €30m (£26m), which is significantly closer to Leverkusen's €35m (£30m) asking price.
Previous concerns that the South American isn't convinced by a move to Ipswich has also been squashed. He's now reportedly keen on a switch to the Premier League. It's a major boost for the newly-promoted side, who could end their transfer window in style ahead of deadline day.

In terms of a midfield partnership, Palacios and Lukic would be an excellent duo. They could form the foundation to keep Ipswich in the Premier League this season. Both have experience, with the latter often performing well during his time at former club Fulham and the latter a proven winner.
If the Tractor Boys can get their deal over the line to sign Palacios, then it will be yet more impressive business.
