The Baltimore Orioles have claimed outfielder Luis Robert Jr. off waivers from the New York Mets. Robert Jr. hit 10 home runs and posted a .702 OPS across 58 games with the Mets this season. 

The Orioles will take on the remainder of his salary, which is about $3 million that also includes a $2 million buyout if they choose to decline his $20 million option for 2027.

The move is surprising. The Orioles already have a boatload of outfielders that they haven't given playing time. Meanwhile, this is Robert's third-straight subpar season that has included a lengthy injury history. 

The Orioles are taking a gamble, but it could be worthwhile as Robert will likely take over the role of Christian Franklin, which would be considered an upgrade. But considering his injury history, having him play everyday shouldn't be on the table. 

The Orioles could have Robert platoon in center field with Colton Cowser. Cowser could also be shifted back to left field and Dylan Beavers to right field. The Orioles also have the option to call up Enrique Bradfield Jr. with rosters expanding on Sept. 1 and have him platoon with Robert in center field, creating several compelling options for the team. 

They could also promote Heston Kjerstad to take a corner outfield or DH spot and have Beavers in left field with Cowser and Robert in center and Leody Taveras in right field. 

Overall, it will be interesting to see how it all unfolds for the Orioles. While Robert's overall production has significantly declined, he did record an .841 OPS in August.
