Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by Adpathway“If they don’t put me in this year, they can mail me my f*****g ring,” Iran Barkley speaking to the author in 2011
As their many fans may know, two of New York’s greatest, most action-packed ring warriors, Iran Barkley and Junior Jones, are NOT yet where they belong – in the International Boxing Hall of Fame. This, the folks at change.org, must, can, and will change.
A petition has been set up by change.org, asking YOU for your signature; your support for both “The Blade” and “Poison.” It really does seem unfair, crazy even, that neither warrior has been enshrined in the HOF. Both men are more than worthy.
Barkley, a three-weight world champion and the only man to defeat the legendary Thomas Hearns twice, was blood and guts personified. Win, lose or draw, Barkley gave his all. And how we loved Barkley for his passion. Wars with Hearns, with Roberto Duran (arguably the greatest middleweight fight of the 1980s), with Robbie Sims, with James Kinchen, with Jorge Amparo (really, a forgotten gem of an ESPN slugfest), and with Michael Olajide, Nigel Benn and others cemented Barkley’s place in the hearts of fight fans. And who can forget the way a supposed washed-up “Blade” wiped out Darrin Van Horn to bag his second world title?
Yeah, Barkley should be residing in the HOF. Sign on now if you agree.
As for Jones, he sure did bring a blend of “Poison” all his own when he set foot in the ring. Tall, thin, and gangly, Jones had savage power, immense heart and fighting guts, and at times, beautiful boxing skills. Jones, like Barkley, twice beat a legend, with Jones stopping and then decisioning Marco Antonio Barrera. Again, crazy is the only word for a fighter who TWICE beat Barrera not being in the HOF.
“Poison,” also like Barkley, lost some; this was when he was caught, hurt, and stopped. But never once did Jones stop swinging, trying. Jones gave us some real epics: see his battles with Barrera, Jorge Julio, John Michael Johnson, Orlando Canizales, Kennedy McKinney, Erik Morales, Tom Johnson and, towards the end of his career, Richard Evatt and Paul Ingle.
Jones should be in the HOF, and if you agree, sign up now and say so!
