With their American League Central Division lead down to a half-game, the Chicago White Sox begin a season-defining three-game series at the Cleveland Guardians on Monday. The White Sox have six wins and four losses against Cleveland in 2026. Chicago hosted six of the 10 games played against Cleveland in 2026 entering Monday.

The White Sox travel to Cleveland with four wins in their last 14 games. Cleveland has eight wins in its last 14 games, trimming its deficit in the AL Central from 4.5 games. If the Guardians or White Sox sweep the three-game series in Cleveland this week, they will take firm control of the AL Central.

The White Sox have led the AL Central since taking sole possession of the division on June 29. On Aug. 16, the White Sox took their biggest AL Central lead this season of 5.5 games after a 7-5 win at the Tigers. Cleveland lost 5-0 at San Diego on Aug. 16, falling six games behind the White Sox.

The series could be determined by the White Sox sluggers against the Guardians' pitching. Hitting stats between the Guardians and White Sox are nearly even other than the power stats. The White Sox have scored 694 runs in 2026 to 606 for Cleveland. The White Sox also have a 193-to-139 advantage in home runs this season.

Guardians vs. White Sox pitching

Cleveland has a pitching advantage this season. Entering the three-game series beginning on Monday, the Guardians have a 3.79 earned run average, 1.26 WHIP, 3.3 walks and 9.6 strikeouts per nine innings, with a 2.87 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

The White Sox have a 4.15 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, 3.6 walks and 8.4 strikeouts per nine innings, with a 2.31 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Sean Newcombe (2-4, 2.77 ERA) is scheduled as the opener for the White Sox on Monday against Gavin Williams (13-7, 3.78 ERA) for Cleveland.

Davis Martin (9-7, 4.05 ERA) is listed as the starter for the White Sox on Tuesday against Foster Griffin (15-5, 3.65 ERA) for Cleveland. The White Sox have not announced an opener or a starter for Wednesday. Parker Messick (11-9, 2.51 ERA) is starting for Cleveland on Wednesday. White Sox pitching needs to match Cleveland to be competitive in the series.
