€6,424 and a spec that shames many far pricier bikes: the Propain Hugene 3 CF Ultimate proves that strong trail performance needn’t cost a fortune. But can the cheapest bike in the group test hold its own against the premium competition?

More bike for your money? While many top-tier trail bikes in this test are nudging the €10,000 mark or sailing well beyond it, Propain prove that serious trail performance doesn’t have to be prohibitively expensive. At €6,424, the Hugene 3 CF Ultimate is the most affordable bike in the entire test field, while the German manufacturer’s extensive online configurator gives you nearly endless scope to tailor the build to your own preferences. With 140/130 mm of travel (front/rear) and a weight of 15.28 kg, the Hugene enters the test as a classic trail bike. But can it hold its own on the trail against rivals costing significantly more?

Spec and features of the Propain Hugene 3 CF Ultimate

The Propain Hugene is one of the most visually cohesive bikes in the entire test field. Its well balanced proportions, with the seatstays merging seamlessly into the main frame, ensure a distinctive yet clean look. Combined with the understated paint finish and red RockShox Lyrik Ultimate fork, the overall package is particularly striking. The build quality also feels suitably premium.

When it comes to the details, the Hugene is very well thought out. One particularly useful touch is the printed torque specifications on all rear suspension pivots, which make maintenance considerably easier. The straight seat tube is also long enough to insert the 200 mm dropper post all the way into the frame. Perfect!

The downtube storage compartment is another well executed feature and ranks among the better solutions in this test field. It’s easy to open even with gloves and has neatly finished edges, with two robust pouches letting you stash away all your trail essentials. Around the storage compartment, the cables are routed through moulded carbon channels before continuing inside a foam sleeve, which keeps them completely quiet. Even a OneUp 100 cc pump fits inside, albeit only in a specific orientation. A small amount of carbon dust inside our test frame slightly detracted from an otherwise premium impression.

Overall, the cable routing works well, too. Around the head tube, the cables disappear neatly into the frame and remain pleasantly quiet on the trail. Less convincing, however, is the front brake hose on our test bike, which was slightly too long and rubbed against the head tube. Propain also leave the unused ports for a mechanical drivetrain open rather than sealing them with rubber plugs, which feels unnecessary.

A generously seized chainstay protector prevents chain slap and paint chips. Less convincing is the extremely tight clearance between the rear brake rotor and the frame. While this caused no issues initially, later in the test the rotor started making contact with the frame and gradually wore through the paint. Such tight tolerances are unacceptable on a high quality carbon frame. Another criticism is that the headset on our test bike developed noticeable creaking noises after just a few test runs.

The Propain Hugene 3 CF Ultimate comes with a consistently high-end spec. Up front, a RockShox Lyrik Ultimate with the Charger 3.1 damper handles suspension duties, though this has since been superseded by the newer 3.2 version. At the rear, a RockShox Super Deluxe Ultimate takes care of the damping. The two work exceptionally well together on the trail, delivering a well-judged blend of sensitivity, support and pop.

Not Quite Perfect
The front brake hose is slightly too long and rubs against the head tube, a small detail that Propain could improve.

SRAM MAVEN Silver brakes with 200 mm rotors front and rear do stopping duties, a pairing that proved itself on the trail, making it one of the most powerful brake setups in the test. Shifting is taken care of by a SRAM X0 Eagle AXS Transmission drivetrain, which delivers precise and reliable gear shifts even under heavy load.

The RockShox Reverb AXS offers 200 mm of travel and can be fully inserted into the frame, providing plenty of freedom of movement. The only other bike with an electronic dropper post in this test field is the Specialized S-Works Stumpjumper 15 EVO, which costs roughly twice as much. For the cockpit, Propain combine a Sixpack Millenium stem and 800 mm OneUp carbon handlebars. On the trail, the cockpit impresses with pleasant compliance and ranks among the more comfortable setups in the test field.

For the wheels, Propain have opted for a robust DT Swiss EX 1700 aluminium wheelset. Both front and rear are fitted with Schwalbe Albert tyres featuring the radial Trail casing, with the grippy Ultra Soft compound up front and the firmer Soft compound at the rear.

The geometry of the Propain Hugene 3 CF Ultimate

With 483 mm reach in size L, the Propain Hugene is one of the longer bikes in the test field on paper, without feeling excessive. Combined with its 1,255 mm wheelbase and 445 mm chainstays, the geometry promises plenty of stability, while the pleasantly steep 77.5° seat tube angle creates a well centred pedalling position.

The 64.8° head angle sits firmly in the modern trail bike middle ground, giving the Hugene enough reserves for demanding descents. With a 632 mm stack, the front end is neither particularly tall nor especially low, helping create a well balanced weight distribution between the front and rear wheels.

How does the Propain Hugene 3 CF Ultimate perform on the trail?

Propain provide documentation covering the frame, components and compatibility, with useful information on mounting hardware, assembly and technical details. However, we found the suspension setup information difficult to access because the links in the download section weren’t working. The recommended suspension setup is rather vague, too. Suggested SAG values of 15–20% at the fork and 20–30% at the shock cover a very broad range, making them only of limited help when it comes to fine tuning.

How does the Propain Hugene 3 CF Ultimate climb?

The Propain Hugene impresses on the climbs with a well balanced riding position. It feels neither too stretched nor too compact, placing you comfortably and centrally on the bike. The steep seat tube angle further boosts its climbing performance, while plenty of weight over the front wheel keeps the front end planted even on steep ascents.

The rear suspension delivers excellent traction on technical climbs, roots and high steps, generating plenty of grip and keeping the rear wheel planted for a long time. At the same time, it remains relatively active. While that adds comfort and traction off road, there is a slight amount of pedal bob on smooth tarmac climbs. Overall, though, pedalling efficiency is excellent, and far better than with the Cannondale and Trek.

Surprisingly, given its traction-focused rear suspension, the Hugene lacks that final measure of composure on our technical test climb and struggled to clear some key sections, with the rear wheel spinning out relatively quickly. Aside from that, the Hugene impresses with a comfortable riding position and strong overall climbing performance.

How does the Propain Hugene 3 CF Ultimate descend?

The Propain Hugene is one of the most agile bikes in the entire test field. It responds eagerly to steering input, flicks effortlessly from line to line, and encourages you to use every roller from the very first metres of trail. Manuals, scrubs and small jumps all come instinctively. Together with the Trek Fuel EX, the Hugene ranks among the most entertaining bikes in the test field.

Playground Rather Than Racetrack
The Hugene thrives on an active riding style, rewarding every movement with plenty of pop and playful handling.

Much of that comes down to the well-judged suspension. The RockShox Lyrik Ultimate and Super Deluxe Ultimate work exceptionally well together, striking just the right balance of sensitivity and support. The rear is smooth off the top, plentiful in mid-stroke support and generous with pop, making it easy to build speed through berms. For our taste, though, the end-stroke progression could be a touch more pronounced.

Despite its playful character, the Hugene remains surprisingly composed at higher speeds. Considering its relatively modest 140/130 mm of travel, stability is on a very good level and noticeably better than on the Santa Cruz Tallboy. However, the Propain still can’t quite match the calmest bikes in the test field, such as the Yeti MT or Cannondale Habit LT. Even so, it handles rough high speed sections with plenty of control, provided you ride actively and pick your lines carefully.

One of the Hugene’s defining traits is the comparatively flexible rear end. The long seatstays, without an additional brace between them, give the back of the bike noticeably more compliance than many of its rivals. This adds traction and comfort while contributing to the Hugene’s playful, entertaining character on the trail. At the same time, that flexibility comes with a downside. Riders who carry plenty of speed through fast berms or tight corners may miss a little precision. The rear end can step out slightly, which is great fun if you like a loose, playful riding style, but it can take away some confidence when you’re trying to hold a clean, precise line.

The Hugene turns every trail into a playground. Few other bikes in this test encourage you to ride actively and make the most of every roller quite like it does.

It’s precisely this playful character that makes the Hugene one of the most entertaining bikes in the entire test field. It rewards you with plenty of pop, intuitive handling and an enormous fun factor. If you like riding creatively and see the trail as a playground, you’ll feel at home on the Propain straight away.

If you like pumping through rollers, treating every ledge as a take off and generating speed creatively, the Hugene is one of the best suited bikes in the entire test field.

The Propain Hugene 3 CF Ultimate is one of the most entertaining bikes in the test, and one of the best value. For far less than many high-end rivals, Propain deliver a fully customisable spec, top-level components, excellent suspension and a host of thoughtful details. Agile handling, impressive pop and a well-balanced setup make the Hugene a bike that constantly invites you to play with the trail, and the comfortable riding position and strong traction only add to the appeal. The flexible rear does cost some precision in fast corners, and quality niggles like the creaking headset on our test bike slightly tarnish the impression. But if you want a playful, well-equipped trail bike at a fair price, the Hugene is an excellent choice.
