The Rangers are promoting pitching prospect Emiliano Teodo, according to a team announcement. Teodo will be making his major league debut when he gets into a game. He is already on the 40-man roster, so no corresponding move is needed there. Teodo replaces reliever Chris Martin on the active roster, as the latter is going on the 15-day injured list for a right shoulder impingement.

It’s the culmination of an interesting minor league journey for the 25-year-old Teodo. The Rangers signed him out of the Dominican Republic in January 2020 for a $10K bonus. Despite the low expectations of that deal, he worked his way up through the minors and reached Double-A in 2024, then Triple-A in 2025. Teodo has ranked among the club’s Top 30 prospects every year from 2023-26, according to MLB.com, peaking at No. 6 in 2025.

Teodo turned heads with a 1.98 ERA in 86 1/3 innings at Double-A in 2024, working mostly as a starter. He converted to a reliever in 2025 and struggled between Double-A and Triple-A, but he impressed in spring training this year and earned praise from manager Bruce Bochy. Teodo has continued to impress at Triple-A, running a 3.76 ERA in 40 2/3 innings along with an above-average 27.8% strikeout rate. His 18.7% walk rate is far too high and contributes to his less impressive 5.37 expected ERA. Still, the Rangers are intrigued enough by Teodo’s high-octane sinker-slider combination to give him a look in the big league bullpen.

FanGraphs’ RosterResource tool has Teodo slotting in as a long reliever. He figures to start out in low-leverage opportunities while attempting to get the walks under control. Texas currently leads the AL West with a 48-47 record and has a 58.5% chance of making the postseason. However, the Mariners and Astros are both within two games of first place. Meanwhile, Rangers relievers actually lead the Majors with a 7.9% walk rate, so it’s unlikely that Teodo will get an extended look if he remains wild on the mound. The likely outcome is that he’ll get into a few games, then head back down to the minors when a fresh arm is needed.

Martin, who turned 40 last month, has struggled with injuries and ineffectiveness in 2026. Today’s placement is his third of the season for a right shoulder impingement, with the righty missing over two months combined for the previous two IL stints. Working around those injuries, Martin has only managed a 9.00 ERA in 14 innings. That said, in contrast to Teodo, Martin is one of the league’s best at limiting free passes, having a 3.3% walk rate in parts of 11 big league seasons. It remains to be seen how much time he will miss, though the club will hope he can get back on track from a run prevention standpoint when he returns.
