Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayRaymond Muratalla believes his future lies one division higher after successfully defending his IBF lightweight title Saturday night in Las Vegas. Although he turned in a one-sided performance against Robson Conceição, the unbeaten champion admitted afterward that making 135 pounds has become increasingly difficult and that he expects to perform better at junior welterweight.
Muratalla (25-0, 17 KOs) earned a unanimous decision by scores of 118-110, 119-109, and 119-109, controlling the fight with disciplined boxing, body punching, and accurate combinations. Conceição remained durable over 12 rounds, but the former Olympic gold medalist struggled to disrupt Muratalla’s rhythm or create sustained offense against the defending champion.
Despite the convincing victory, Muratalla wasn’t completely satisfied with his performance.
“I felt good. I don’t think I gave my best performance. I think making 135 is a little hard for me. I’m going to feel a lot better at 140,” Muratalla said after the fight.
Those comments may signal the beginning of the end of Muratalla’s run at lightweight. Weight cuts often become more demanding as fighters mature physically, and the champion indicated that competing five pounds higher would allow him to perform closer to his full potential.
If Muratalla follows through with a move to 140 pounds, he would join one of boxing’s deepest divisions after closing out his lightweight run with another dominant title defense. His victory over Conceição reinforced his technical ability, while his postfight remarks shifted attention toward what may come next rather than what he accomplished inside the ring.
