Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayThe Tampa Bay Rays have scuffled of late, losing three of their previous four games. An injury to one of their top starting pitchers could not have come at a worse time.
The Rays announced that pitcher Shane McClanahan has been placed on the Injured List due to left forearm tightness. Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reported that McClanahan does not believe the injury is serious and hopes he can pitch again this season.
McClanahan had missed the past two years due to his recovery from Tommy John surgery in 2023 and nerve problems in his left arm. He underwent surgery in August 2025 to address that issue, sidelining him for the remainder of the year.
He had been relatively healthy this season, only missing time in August due to tightness in the middle of his back. Although he had not returned to his previous All-Star form in 2026, McClanahan posted a 3.36 ERA and a 1.119 WHiP over his 118 innings, striking out 106 batters with 39 walks.
Losing Shane McClanahan could have major impact on Tampa Bay Rays' World Series aspirations
McClanahan had not looked like himself since he returned from his stint on the IL. He had allowed 11 runs, 10 earned, on 17 hits and four walks over his 19 innings covering four starts, striking out 15 batters. He pitched into the sixth inning only once in that span, topping out at 80 pitches in those outings.
The Rays still have a solid 1-2 punch atop the rotation without McClanahan. Nick Martinez is in the midst of a career year. Drew Rasmussen has established himself as a top-of-the-rotation starter. However, the rest of the rotation is filled with question marks. Freddy Peralta looked as though he has finally returned to form in his past two outings but has otherwise struggled this year. Ian Seymour and Griffin Jax have had their moments, but neither are proven options.
If McClanahan can return, and return to his typical form, the Rays could enter the postseason with a formidable quartet as their rotation. Otherwise, McClanahan's latest injury could put a significant dent into their hunt for the franchise's first championship.
