The historic Boston Red Sox surge has had them go from a 32-46 slump to an unbelievable 17-2 run, and part of their turnaround success has been due to their dominant bullpen. 

The Red Sox lead MLB with a 3.09 team bullpen ERA with strong contributions from veteran closer Aroldis Chapman, Justin Slaten and Garrett Whitlock. 

Chapman has recorded 21 saves across 23 opportunities across 30.2 innings with an exceptional 2.05 ERA with 38 strikeouts. Setup man Garrett Whitlock has held his own with a dominant 2.06 ERA with 38 strikeouts and a 0.91 WHIP across 35 innings. 

While Slaten had struggled in June with an ERA of 9.00, he has transformed into a stabilizing force as a reliable late-inning option who has picked up 13 holds this season and has improved his ERA to 2.08 in July.

Red Sox bullpen has helped lock down opposing offenses

Since late June, the Red Sox's relief corps has boasted a 2.49 ERA and a .196 opponent batting average. The Red Sox have transformed from being sellers at the Aug. 3 trade deadline to buyers and making a posteason run. They currently hold a 58.6% chance of making the postseason, according to FanGraphs, compared to 8.4% on June 22. 

In July, the Red Sox's bullpen has provided quality shutdown innings, sporting a 1.65 ERA and 0.90 WHIP. But their pitching overall has been elite and was a huge part of their successful sweep of the AL East rival Tampa Bay Rays across a four-game stretch. 

Red Sox relievers Greg Weissert, Jovani Moran and Ryan Watson pitched three scoreless innings out of the pen to secure a 6-1 victory on July 19 and ultimately a four-game series sweep of the Rays. Tyron Guerrero has also been a significant contributor out of the pen with his 100+ mph fastball. 

Their next test is the Baltimore Orioles, who are riding a seven-game winning streak, which should make for an exciting AL East showdown on Monday night at Fenway Park.
