Former Arizona Diamondbacks closer Paul Sewald has rebounded in his new environment with the Toronto Blue Jays. 

While his time with the team has been brief, he has showcased how he's been a successful, underrated addition. The 36-year-old struggled with a 6.23 ERA across 45 appearances for the Diamondbacks before being designated for assignment in August. 

The Blue Jays acquired him on Aug. 12, and he's found his rhythm in his new home. The veteran has pitched 6 2/3 innings across seven appearances and has allowed only three hits. He has yet to give up an earned run. 

In addition, he's recorded five strikeouts with a 0.90 WHIP and has held opponents to a .130 batting average.

Sewald has found early success in Toronto with his new role in low-leverage situations that has helped take a load off compared to the high-leverage role of closing out games with Arizona that placed added pressure on him. 

The Blue Jays have utilized him in low-stakes situations with a reduced workload that has allowed him to pitch with more confidence. Sewald was acquired off waivers to help provide a fresh and experienced arm while also stabilizing a bullpen that's been hit with injuries and overworked. Pitching in short middle-relief spots has also helped improve his mechanics. 

In July with the Diamondbacks, he struggled with giving up the long ball as well as hard contact. His performance in July also had him log an inflated 10.80 ERA across 12 outings with 18 hits and surrendering 12 earned runs with numerous blown saves. A significant drop followed his dominant 3.08 ERA and 0.72 WHIP across his first 29 appearances, which is another aspect of what appealed to the Blue Jays in claiming him.
