Fit and Comfort

The shoe’s most noticeable feature is its generous toe box, which lets your toes spread and splay naturally. The zero-drop platform lets your foot move more like it would barefoot, reducing fatigue and improving balance on uneven ground. Cushioning is modest but adequate. If you prefer more support or more underfoot padding like a max trail runner, these will feel too minimal. Break-in time is immediate. I could wear them right away without any fit issues.

Protection

I don't look at my feet when I hike, so I like good toe protection just in case I bash into a rock. Like all serious hikers, I've had my share of broken toes and toenails. The Trail Thrasher scores high in terms of toe and foot protection with hefty front-toe kicks and a nubuck upper that's unlikely to split or get shredded at the corners of the toebox.

A beefy front toe kick and reinforced toe box provide protection and added durability.

Waterproofing

The Gore-Tex lining helps keep feet dry when worn in wet grass, shallow puddles, and muddy conditions. The tongue and upper also help prevent water and trail debris from entering around the laces. Because this is a low-cut shoe, it cannot protect against water that rises above the collar. Deep puddles and stream crossings will likely leave your feet wet. The waterproof construction can feel warmer than a non-waterproof shoe in hotter weather, but warmer when there's a chill in the air. Nevertheless, for ordinary wet-weather hiking and daily walking, the protection is useful.

Traction and Trail Performance

The Vibram Megagrip outsole provides solid grip on packed earth, gravel, roots, and rocky inclines. The shoe is stable on maintained trails while remaining comfortable when the route varies between roots and rocks, gravel, or pavement.

But the Trail Thrasher is not as flexible a shoe as many zero-drop trail runners and is much sturdier, somewhere in between a trail runner and an approach shoe. That takes a little time to get used to, but it's useful if you want to use them across a wide range of surfaces, from trails to gravel and pavement.

Recommendation

The Lems Trail Thrasher Pro GTX is a comfortable and versatile choice for day hikers and walkers who prefer a wide, natural zero-drop fit. Its strengths include a zero-drop platform, a spacious toe box, waterproof Gore-Tex protection, a grippy Vibram outsole, and durable construction. If it has one weakness, it's the styling. Its plain black look is not the most appealing, even compared with the outlandish color palettes of trail runners and other athletic shoes.
