Liverpool’s surprise move for Ronald Araújo is effectively complete, with the Barcelona defender now only awaiting his official unveiling as the Reds’ latest summer signing.

The Uruguay international will join on a season-long loan, giving Andoni Iraola an experienced and physically dominant option at a time when Liverpool badly need defensive reinforcements.

The move also carries relatively little long-term risk because Liverpool will have the choice, rather than the obligation, to make Araújo’s stay permanent next summer.

His arrival comes after Ibrahima Konaté left for Real Madrid and injuries reduced Iraola’s available options at centre-back.

Joe Gomez has suffered a muscle problem, Giovanni Leoni is recovering from an ACL injury and summer arrival Jérémy Jacquet has yet to feature during pre-season following shoulder surgery.

Romano confirms all documents have been signed

Fabrizio Romano reports that Liverpool and Barcelona have now exchanged all the necessary documents for Araújo’s transfer, with everything signed ahead of his unveiling as a Liverpool player.

Romano had previously revealed that the clubs had reached an agreement over the unexpected loan move.

The structure of the agreement makes the deal particularly interesting. According to Sky Sports, Liverpool have an option to purchase Araújo for approximately €55 million (£47.1m) next summer.

Araújo brings significant experience, having played more than 200 times for Barcelona, while his ability to operate both centrally and at right-back gives Iraola valuable versatility.

Liverpool have found a clever short-term option

This looks like smart business given Liverpool’s current circumstances.

Spending another huge fee on a centre-back immediately would have been risky, particularly with Jacquet already viewed as an important long-term investment.

Araújo allows Liverpool to strengthen now without committing permanently.

There are questions surrounding his recent form after he started only 11 La Liga matches last season, but his pace, aggression and experience at the highest level make the gamble worthwhile.

Most importantly, Liverpool control what happens next. If Araújo thrives in England, €55m could become an attractive price for an established international defender.

If he struggles, the Reds can simply return him to Barcelona.

For a club needing immediate defensive security without another enormous financial commitment, it is difficult to find a more sensible solution.
