Ryan (26-2, 21 KOs) has spent months calling himself the “Face of Boxing.” That label has sounded premature because popularity alone does not make someone the sport’s leading fighter. An $8 million gate, however, gives his argument something more substantial than social media followers and interview clips.

The crowd did not pay to watch a cautious 12-round chess match. Ryan dropped Benn with an overhand right and forced the stoppage at 1:25 of the second round, delivering the fast and violent ending Zuffa wanted from its new WBC welterweight champion.

That finish also makes Ryan easier to sell the next time. Fans remember knockouts, especially when they happen before the opponent has time to settle into the fight. Benn’s reputation, British following, and months of trash talk helped pack the building, but Ryan was clearly the central attraction.

For comparison, the Jaron “Boots” Ennis-Xander Zayas card generated a gate of $2,440,779.50 at Barclays Center in June. Ryan-Benn more than tripled that figure. Boots may be the more complete technical fighter, but the ticket window operates under different rules.

The question is how Ryan uses this leverage. Teofimo Lopez was invited into the ring, Devin Haney wants another fight, and Dana White has openly discussed signing Ryan to Zuffa Boxing. Each side now knows the money attached to him.

One sellout does not settle the Face of Boxing argument. It does prove that Ryan belongs in the conversation, and it gives him the power to demand another major opponent rather than a safe title defense.
