Wolverhampton Wanderers are eyeing instant reinforcements after dropping down to the Championship, and are now one of a number of clubs chasing Bournemouth defender Max Aarons.
Wolves lead race for Premier League defender
It's a massive summer for Wolves. With relegation confirmed for some time, those in the Midlands have had the chance to think about the players that could take them straight back to the Premier League.
It's left them turning their focus towards stars like Kieran Tripper, who just waved goodbye to St James' Park for the final time as a Newcastle United player.
The experienced right-back would be an excellent addition and it's clearly an area that Rob Edwards wants to strengthen ahead of next season.
According to Sports Boom, Wolves are now leading the race to sign Aarons from Bournemouth this summer. The defender will return to the South Coast this summer after a mixed spell on loan at Rangers, and it's then that Wolves, Porto and West Ham United could come calling for his signature.
Those at Molineux are already in pole position, but could receive an extra boost from the defender's agent, who also represents Wolves midfielder Angel Gomes.
As for Bournemouth, they've got no urgency to sell Aarons. He's still got three years left on his current contract - leaving them in a strong position to negotiate. Whether they will use that position or accept the right-back's exit remains to be seen, however.
Wolves keen to avoid bottom-place finish, says Edwards
Wolves' season has been over for quite some time, but that hasn't stopped Edwards from having something to aim for. Although his side are down, he has expressed his eagerness to avoid finishing at the very foot of the table, with the chance to move ahead of Burnley with victory on the final day.
"You don’t want to finish bottom. I don’t think anyone does, so of course it’s the only thing now, as a group, and as a team, that we can really cling on to and that we can aim for as a group.
“It’s important to have something to aim for as a group, although it’s obviously not what we wanted. It’s not what the team would have wanted, it’s not something the fans would have wanted from the end of this season, of course not, but there’s something there and the game does mean something."
The fans, meanwhile, may just be keen to see the back of the current campaign, which has been a disaster from the very start.
