Sergio de Larrea, whose draft rights were acquired by the Mavericks in a trade during last month’s NBA Draft, impressed with his playmaking during Summer League despite struggling with his outside shot.

The young Spanish guard averaged 8.8 assists against 3.0 turnovers per game, displaying the creativity and vision that have made him one of Europe’s most promising prospects. Summer League coach Joe Boylan praised de Larrea for staying true to his strengths.

“He’s come in from day one with a great understanding of who he is,” Boylan said. “The lob passing. The creative passing. Going behind the back, through the legs. I think that’s kind of who he is.

“The guy has played professional basketball at a high level already. I think he’s going to bring that to any game he plays. If he was at Lifetime Fitness, I think he’d be throwing those passes.”

According to Christian Clark of The Athletic, de Larrea’s chances of earning regular minutes as a rookie could depend on how quickly he improves in a few key areas.

Boylan said the guard understands what he needs to develop before making the jump to the NBA.

“He knows some of the things he has to work on. Dealing with the physicality. Shooting the ball from deep range. Those will be points of emphasis we continue to work on in the summertime.”
