Things have come to a close for All-Star catcher Shea Langeliers, whose knee injury has placed the Athletics in a negative double whammy, taking him off the trade market and stripping the team of its premier All-Star catcher. 

It disrupts teams that were interested in pursuing him ahead of the Aug. 3 trade deadline and takes away a key power bat for the A's, whose season is taking a downturn following a competitive start. 

Langeliers is expected to have surgery that will either leave him absent for a lengthy amount of time (6-8 weeks) or the rest of the season, eliminating trade buzz. 

Additionally, the A's were open to listening to offers for the 28-year-old who was putting up a breakout campaign and led the A's offense with 23 home runs and 51 RBI while slashing .263/.332/.497.

Undoubtedly, the injury is a devastating blow for both Langeliers and the A's, as his standout All-Star season comes to a close while the A's also lose their main source of power that helped them during the hot stretch in late May. 

They held a winning record of 27-26 while also leading the AL West by 2.5 games, appearing to look like surprise contenders. But things have now taken a downturn as they sit fourth with a 44-60 record and struggled before the All-Star break with a nine-game losing streak. 

As a solid contributor who carried momentum with a strong first-half performance, his absence adds to a season that has already been derailed by long-term injuries to key players including Brent Rooker, Luis Severino and Gunnar Hoglund. 

Simultaneously, it not only thins out the catcher market but it also leaves a significant void behind the dish for the A's and in their clubhouse for a team that's been in rebuild mode. 

Langeliers is also under team control through 2028, which means the A's will have to wait until the offseason next year to reexamine the state of his health before attempting to dive into the trade market again.
