The Los Angeles Dodgers may be looking to add to the rotation at the upcoming MLB trade deadline as questions about the health of Shohei Ohtani's knee linger.

On Sunday morning, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts revealed that Ohtani will not make his scheduled start in Philadelphia against the Phillies on Wednesday as he continues to battle lingering inflammation in his left knee. Ohtani has not pitched since July 3 after it was revealed he had been dealing with the inflammation and irritation since a June 11 start in Pittsburgh.

"We just want to continue to give (the knee) the best chance to get into a good spot," Roberts told reporters, via Katie Woo of The Athletic.

"It's going to be some time and I'd say that it's not going to be a day-to-day thing," Roberts added, via Sonja Chen of MLB.com.

Those words are a bit ominous for a Dodgers rotation that is also missing Tyler Glasnow and Blake Snell from its core. Snell had loose bodies removed from his left elbow but could return in early August if all goes well. Glasnow, meanwhile, has been sidelined with back spasms since early May and is reportedly only throwing fastballs while trying to work his way back.

Will Shohei Ohtani's health determine the Dodgers' trade deadline moves?

If those two do return in August, it would certainly be a boost for the Los Angeles rotation for the season's stretch run. However, with Ohtani's situation keeping him off the mound, could this mean the Dodgers may go big at the trade deadline for another front-line starter? A splash move for Detroit's Tarik Skubal or another well-known name may make more sense after hearing Ohtani will not be pitching for "some time."

Keep in mind that Ohtani has already pitched 85.2 innings this season after throwing just 47.0 innings last year after recovering from elbow surgery. Keeping Ohtani healthy and ready for the postseason would seem to be a priority for Roberts and the Dodgers, especially with his increased workload already this season.

Of course, the Dodgers have to get to October and have work to do to ensure they will have home-field advantage throughout the National League postseason. Los Angeles entered Sunday's action just one game ahead of the Milwaukee Brewers for the best record in the NL.

While Ohtani can still do damage for the Dodgers at the plate serving as the team's designated hitter, keeping him off the mound may be a sign that the Dodgers will once again be one of the biggest trade deadline buyers.
