UFC bantamweight contender Song Yadong shared a classy reaction to Usman Nurmagomedov’s controversial charge into the cage.

Song Yadong undoubtedly earned the biggest win of his career by knocking out Umar Nurmagomedov at UFC Shanghai last Saturday. Entering the fight as a significant underdog, Yadong handed Nurmagomedov his second career defeat, and his first by stoppage.

Immediately following the win, and as Yadong circled the cage to celebrate, Umar’s brother Usman Nurmagomedov nearly collided with him as he attempted to console him. In viral footage, some fans pointed out that it looked like Usman attempted to throw a spinning elbow at Yadong after they briefly collided in the UFC Shanghai aftermath.

Despite the online uproar, Yadong shared a surprising take on Usman charging the cage.

In a recent interview with BiliBili, Yadong was asked to react to the post-fight controversy involving Usman.

“Watching the slow motion, it looked like he was turning around to throw an elbow or something. But I understand it because they are brothers,” Yadong said of Usman.

“The internet said he wanted to maliciously attack me, but he just thought I was going over to attack him. But there weren’t any verbal attacks before the fight. He went over to check on his brother, suddenly, someone runs over- you’d definitely react that way.”

Usman, a potential UFC signee, is regarded as one of the best lightweights in Mixed Martial Arts. In post-fight comments, he defended his actions following UFC Shanghai in a recent social media post.

UFC Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier also defended Usman’s actions following UFC Shanghai. Cormier is close with Usman and Team Khabib, and he was teammates with Khabib Nurmagomedov and other Dagestanis at American Kickboxing Academy.

As for Yadong, a potential title shot is on the horizon following UFC Shanghai. He could face the winner of the Petr Yan vs. Merab Dvalishvili trilogy, set for later this year at UFC 333.
