How long do you give a signing to repay the investment? That might be the question Tottenham Hotspur are asking themselves regarding £65m man, Dominic Solanke.
Signed from Bournemouth two years ago, the Englishman was selected as the belated successor to Harry Kane, the club's record scorer having been bizarrely allowed to leave in 2023 without a direct replacement being signed that summer.
At the time of his arrival in 2024, Solanke had looked like a coming force at Premier League level, fresh from netting 19 goals for the Cherries in the top flight.

Now, two seasons of injury woe has left Roberto De Zerbi in desperate need of a new centre-forward, with this summer's extravagant rebuild only "60% complete", in the eyes of the Italian.
Why a new striker has to be Spurs' next priority
It was the summer of the striker a year ago, as Viktor Gyokeres moved to Arsenal, Benjamin Sesko headed to Manchester United, and both Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike joined Liverpool, among many other Premier League centre-forward signings.
Spurs weren't in that market at the time, although with Solanke scoring just 12 league goals in two seasons, there is a pressing need to upgrade in that department now.
In the Englishman's absence, Richarlison did lead the way with 11 league goals at N17, although as sources told Football FanCast earlier this summer, the Brazilian could be sold before deadline day considering he has just a year remaining on his current deal.
Rising academy star Will Lankshear won't be following in Kane's footsteps after joining Middlesbrough on a deal that could reach £20m, while Alejo Veliz has departed for Brazilian side Bahia.
With fellow youngster, Dane Scarlett, yet to really flourish in any of his numerous loan spells, you'd be hard-pressed to suggest he can flourish back in the first team, with De Zerbi not exactly brimming with options through the middle.

The list of potential incomings has also been trimmed by the news of Eli Junior Kroupi's injury blow, the 20-year-old - who had been open to joining the Lilywhites - set to be sidelined for up to four months, ensuring any exit now appears unlikely.
Thankfully, Spurs and ENIC do have alternatives to Kroupi in mind, with there a hope building that the club will finally fill Kane's long-standing void.
How Spurs plan to end their centre-forward woes
As noted above, Kroupi had looked like the leading target over recent weeks and months, the ex-Lorient starlet fresh from a record-breaking debut season in the Premier League.
According to TEAMtalk, Tottenham had actually been 24 hours away from lodging an £80m bid for the Frenchman, only for the injury revelation to derail that approach.
As per the same report, the Lilywhites do have other options in mind, with Club Brugge's Nicolo Tresoldi one of the strikers that the club have carried out 'substantial work' on.
The 21-year-old is also attracting significant interest from LaLiga giants, Barcelona, although Spurs are weighing up a move of their own, with the German-Italian fitting the Kroupi brief as another exciting young marksman.
Suggesting that a player of that age can finally replace Kane might appear a little far-fetched, yet Tresoldi - as that Barca interest showcases - is so highly rated, even hailed by talent scout Jacek Kulig as looking like a "Luis Suarez regen".
He had only scored seven league goals in each of the previous two seasons with Hannover in Germany's second tier, although 2025/26 was a real breakout year following his move to Belgium.
Indeed, in 40 Pro League games for Brugge, the Suarez-esque striker scored 19 goals and registered five assists, scoring a goal every 132 minutes.

For comparison, looking back to Kane's own breakthrough season at Spurs in 2014/15, the then-youngster was only just ahead with 21 Premier League goals that year, alongside notching two assists, having scored at a rate of one every 123 minutes.
In Tresoldi's case, he did miss 17 'big chances', although he boasted a solid goal conversion rate of 19%, while also netting three times in just seven starts in the Champions League.
He might not quite be the nimble figure of Suarez in his Liverpool pomp, but Tresoldi does boast exquisite movement inside the area, producing a delightful array of close-range finishes across 2025/26.
A true poacher, like Kane or like Suarez, 18 of his Pro League goals last term came inside the area, while he netted 15 with his right, two with his left and two with his head.
In essence, give the young striker a chance in the opposition box, and he's likely to take it, with there a natural feel to his game that Spurs perhaps haven't seen with either Solanke or Richarlison of late.
Of course, considering 2025/26 was Tresoldi's first truly consistent year of goalscoring, any deal would be something of a risk, although look back to the example of Kane, the now-England skipper almost coming from nowhere in 2014/15 after traversing a string of loans in the EFL.
That's not to say any player can ever get close to Kane's level in a Tottenham shirt, but there's plenty of reason to be excited by what Tresoldi could offer in a De Zerbi team next season.
